Ok, OK, so I'm a (complete set) hypocrite........

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,705 ✭✭✭✭✭
A few months ago, I swore I would never get a coin regraded just to complete my set. Well, broke down and did so this week. It is a 1886 IHC ty. 2 in MS66R that was unrecognized as a variety in the old green holder. It really bugged me that it was the only coin needed to complete the set. I finally broke down and sent it to PCGS. Just got the cert. # today and have officially completed the IHC variety set. With my luck, it will have a big PCGS fingerprint in 2 years!image

Of the varieties needed to complete the set, here are mine.

1860 Pointed Bust MS66 Pop. 4/1

1865 Plain 5 MS65R Pop. 9/0

1867/67 MS64R Pop. 3/0

1873 closed 3 MS67R Pop. 1/0 (the only 67R for a 10 year span).

1873 S1 DDO MS65RB Pop. 2/0

1886 Ty2 MS66R Pop. 0/0, soon to be 1/0

1888/7 MS64RB Pop. 1/0

1894/94 RPD MS66R Pop. 1/0

1897 1 in neck MS64RB Pop. 1/0

It's been fun. Am looking forward to the occasional upgrades over the next few years. imageimage

congrats on a great accomplishment. The 1865 has the so-called fancy 5 variety. Is that worth any premium in MS63 RB?

The Pittsburgh ANA show would be a great place to show off your newly slabbed Type 2. image Congrats, that's quite an accomplishment.

    Coinkat,

That's a Two Cent Piece variety, is it also an IHC variety? In Two Centers, it doesn't bring a premium over the plain five.

    Russ:

You are right that the 1865 fancy 5 is a 2 Cent variety, but there also is an IHC variety. Breen says it is scarcer than the standard 1865 cent, but I am just not sure it worth much more. I believe that varieties are the last great frontier for many series and perhaps variety collecting will become more popular as time goes on.

The variety that brings a BIG premium is the 1865 fancy 5 DDR - strongly doubled on the reverse. O/W, no real premium. The fancy 5 is needed for the basic and variety IHC sets.

    Lakesammman:

Thanks for the reply... I did not think there was a premium, but was not certain. great job with the IHC varieties.

Congratulations on a fabulous accomplishment - maybe you could try the proofs next - maybe copper plate that Aluminum 64-L & submit it for re-grade! image
