Did anyone ever take the trip to Niagra Falls?

ms70ms70 Posts: 13,954 ✭✭✭✭✭

I frequently see the add by Richard Nachbar Rare Coins in Coin World & was wondering if anyone ever really took him up on his offer
to buy their coin collection & receive the complimentary Hotel, Dinner, and ride on the Maid of the Mist.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Niagra Falls!!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist a good 3 Stooges reference.

I've never been. But that's where my parents had their honeymoon back in 1948. I should have told them to save some frankies and jeffs and hold them for me in a cool dry place until I was born. image

Oh and by the way, yes I've been there, and it's quite a site to see. Not as tall as I had expected, but very broad with huge volumes of water rushing down the falls -- very loud thunderous and very exhilarating experience...

Was there when I was 6. I hear its changed a bunch and there's casinos on the Canadian side now.

I'll probably go back when I have kids. Gotta let them see the wonders of nature kinda thing.

Anyone know anything about "Howe Caverns"? I think it's on the way up there. Mom and Dad took my brother and I to such cool places when we were little.

I'm not familiar with the Three Stooges doing the Niagra Falls routine. That was an Abbot and Costello routine. OK did some searching, turns out it predated both of them. It was an old burlesque classic. Abbot and Costello did it in the movie "Lost in Harlem" and the Stooges did it in the short "Gents without Cents". Both films were released in 1944.

I thought I saw it on an "I Love Lucy" episode.

I always wondered about Nachbar, too. I'm guessing he must be a wholesaler/middleman...never see him advertising as a seller.

  • Hmmmm. Maybe I should place a full page ad too. I could offer to fly you in to Grand Rapids, Michigan. If I buy your collection, then I will refund your plane ticket and then show you the "grand rapids", which are just a short walk from my downtown office. After that, I will take you to Taco Bell for a Gordita and a Bean Burrito. If you don't sell to me, then I will walk you over to the Greyhound and you can find your own way home. Get your own Gordita! (just kidding, of course)

ACG had a similar ad in Coin World a couple of years ago. They would pay for your air fare to Florida if you spent over $1000 in slabbing fees (or something stupid like that). I emailed them and asked them if they would fly me first class and put me up in the Hilton, but they never responded!

  • I went to Medical School in Buffalo, NY. I have been to Richard's place. The Falls are about 25 min. away. If you are going to go, make sure to check out the Canadian side as well.

I live less than 3 hours away. Its pretty neat to see in the winter when the river is frozen over and ice is all over the trees.

I was in Rochester last week on business, and drove up to Niagra Falls over the weekend. It was my first time there.
Actually, I was rather disappointed. The water below the falls looked dirty/polluted to me, compared to the beach here in San Diego. I went to the Canadian side, on a friend's recommendation. The "Maid of the Mist" seems like a ripoff @ $9.00+ for a 10 minute "cattle boat" ride. It cost $7.50 to cross the border, another $7.00 to park. Toll road from Rochester was around $8.00. But, now I can say that I was there, anyway. image
