What set do you want to complete once??

For me, it might take some years. First I want to complete the topps 1971 set in PSA 7 and higher, and after that I start with the topps 1970 set, wich is actually the set I first started with in september last year. After that I think I will do the '67 or '68 set....

BTW might do some earlier stuff as well....

  • Dennis,

Is there a particular reason why you plan to skip over the 1969 set?

I have had numerous battles within myself on thoughts of completing a set, I want to someday complete the 56 baseball set in psa 7 with a few 8's here and there. As I am aproaching the completion of the Brooklyn Dodgers team I look ahead to the Yankee's, after these are completed, I will have the task of several hundred commons to get at probably twenty dollars apiece roughly, I often ask myself if I am denying myself other great cards from other 50's sets and do I want to make the sacrifice? It is tough to stick with a set but if I do ever complete one set it would have to be the 56 set. Anybody else have this dilemma in going after one set?

Not really. I do like the 69 set (like all sets from the 63-73 erea) but I think that, especcially the 68 set is somewhat nicer due to the rookies who started (Nolan Ryan) and the older ones who quit (Mickey Mantle)....

I might do the set sometime, but at the moment I'm still not sure....

Do you collect the 69 set actively???

1950 Topps Feltback Football is on my long-term "complete it someday" list. Of course, we all have dreams about finally adding the Wagner that completes our T206 set, but the feltbacks I think I can actually do (although it won't be easy).

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Dennis,

1969 is the only set I am working on right now and I'm not sure what I'll start when I finish it. I'm currently at 70% and I plan to be at 95% by the end of the yeatr through submissions and purchases.

I have one set (and many player sets) that I'd really like to complete. The 57 baseball set is great looking and has some nice rookies in it. My goal is 6-7...Don't have the funds to go after the higher grade cards. I have about 20% graded, 95% of the set overall with about 120 cards that I'd like to grade from it. The remaining 5% will all be purchased in graded form. Luckily I have most of the big namers already.

perkdog- you bring up a good point, i think team sets will only continue to grow in popularity. i'm working on completing 2 graded sets at the moment but in the future i can see myself going primarily for yankee team sets of the fifties and sixties in psa 7 or better.
i really love the 67 topps set i have a raw set minus a few in ex-nm i have mulled the idea of doing the whole set in psa 8 with some 7's , i know it will be a relatively costly endeavour and i have asked myself the same question regarding depriving myself of other great cards. on the other hand building a number smaller team set may not leave one with the sense of achievement that the larger set undoubtebly offer... i guess time (and money) will tell.

    Perkdog,
That Dodgers set must have been quite a challenge.
One of these days, I'm going to go for all the Tigers cards from the 50's through the 70's. From a set standpoint, I want to go for the 75 mini set in 8 or better, with no fisheyes.

The next big set I will start is the 93 Finest Refractors. They are really appealing to me because they kind of straddle the fence between modern and vintage. They were the set that inspired the whole insert craze, but they appeared before condition was as big an issue as it is now. Centering is absolutely horrible, and with ~240 of each card produced, finding a well centered card can be really tough. I have 2 or 3 right now and they really are nice looking cards as well. With less than 200 cards in the set, it is also not an absolute monster.

Maybe down the road, 56 Topps. I really like T206s, but the thing that gets me is the backs. I just don't like the fact that there are so many of them out there. To have a complete master set would be impossible for any number of reasons, but it would still be nice to hold a 100 year old piece of cardboard.
  • Jeff don't bother with the Refractor set, unless you want to mortgage your house. i spent $550 a few years ago and ended up with a whopping 3 PSA 9's
  • jimtbjimtb Posts: 704 ✭✭
    Hi Jeff,
The refractor set would be a huge challenge, especially on the star cards where your bidding againist player collectors as well. It would an amazing accomplishment to complete that set - Good Luck!

After I finish the sets I'm currently working on ('65, 69, & 77), one of the 50's sets will be next . Probably the '54, 55, or '57 but that is subject to change. It's going to take a few years to finish my first 3 sets as these were all undertaken since march 1 of this year. Really I could collect about any set from the turn of the 20th century to around 1985. I love this stuff !

  • Currently I'm not much of a set builder in raw form, let alone graded. A few sets, however, have achieved back burner status as something that I think would be fun some day if my player-collecting ever dwindles. They are:

1997 Pinnacle Inside WNBA -- this idea probably has the best shot at becoming reality since it only has 81 cards. Throw in its status as the first WNBA set and it's got some solid appeal despite perhaps not being a tough set conditionwise.

1997 Fleer baseball -- The printing technique Fleer used in both '96 and '97 (and maybe a year or two after that; not sure about '98 and '99) is absolutely beautiful; I happen to prefer the lettering on the '97 cards. This is also the only common set design between all three of my favorite athletes (Alan Trammell, Tom Glavine, and Tim Duncan in the '97'-98 basketball set of the same design), which fun. Also not a particularly tough set condition-wise, if the Duncan population report is any indication.

2003-04 Topps Basketball -- something about this set just grabs me--I think mainly it's the borders and the fact that it's kind of a balance between modern and classical styles. I'm mostly done with the raw set and have found that it's not immune to centering and edge problems--though certainly it's not as tough as older sets to find a nice one. And of course it has a strong class of rookie cards.

  • I'm surprised no one said 1952 Topps Baseball!
I started this set last year and quickly got to about 25% thanks to an auction win and a bunch of cheap pick-ups at last year's National, but it will be very slow from here on in.
Since I have a lot of low-end cards, it will take over a couple decades to complete this set in even PSA 6, but I would love to do it!

I work on a ton of raw sets all the time, but 'sfar as graded - here's my goal:
#1 - My '59 Morrell's, cause it won't be done until I get a NICE Koufax, which I've never seen ever in my life ever - even the one in my sig is a '61.
    #2 - '62 Bell Brand
#3 - changes from day to day; today: a nice T68 would make me happyimage
