coin show ancients

Is it safe to buy ancients at a coin show? A guy I bought from said he lives on a farm called first light coins, named after his horse. He says he buys hoards, identifies them here and sells them at shows. He seemed trustable, just wanted to get your input. I bought a few different romans from him for about $10 a piece, all identified. He had a great selection, stuff from $3-$1000, he had all different countries. If I can borrow my dads camera, I will post pics to see if you guys think their authentic or not. Any comments?

  • Sure, post pictures by all means. Collector value of a coin depends on condition of a coin. If they still have good detail you may have gotten a deal but hordes of ancients have been found and cleaned and may be worth very little.

From what I've seen personally, that's where all the nice ones are!

  • Ancient coins aren't as faked as often as people think. They dig up tens of thousands of them out of fields in Europe every year. Listening to your description, it sounds like everything should be fine from that seller.

Coinguy89 - I think at ten bucks you did ok. If you really get into ancients do your homework. As is quoted many times "buy the book". Others on this board would be able to recommend specific titles.
