    VDB
    No VDB on shoulder
    VDB on shoulder
    Steel
    Shellcase
    Memorial copper
    Copper/Zinc

Oops that 7 and I chose 6. Also there are some design/date changes if you wanted more "types".

    Wheat
    Steele
    Memorial

none of that bronze vs copper plated zinc stuff. Too similar in appearance, only a weight difference.

    Wheat with VDB
    Wheat without VDB
    Steel wheat
    Memorial bronze
    Memorial zinc

5 major types....far more when you consider minor design changes such as adding the VDB to the bust in 1918.

Interesting. I also chose four, but a different four:

    Wheat/Copper
    Wheat/Steel
    Memorial/Copper
    Memorial/Zinc

This question might be more complicated than a simple integer answer...

I voted four but actually I would say 5 forgot steel. As coppercoins says.

    How about this...

    1909 vdb
A 1916 to 1919 coin with the full beard detail
    Another later date wheat coin
    Steel Cent
(Shell case cent, I'm undecided about this)
    A memorial from 1959-1968
A memorial from 1969-1982 copper (these had a new hub and totally look different)
An early zinc cent from the 80's (these look very different from the copper ones too)
A zinc cent from the 90's (again changes in design and very different look from the cents of the 80's)

I came up with exactly the same list, then realized (a) 7 wasn't a valid option, and (b) in practice I never differentiate the no-VDB wheat and sheelcase bronze as distinct types. Therefore, my vote was '5'.

When picking the numbers, this is what I was thinking of:

    I. Major design changes:
    1. Wheat reverse (1909-58)
    2. Memorial reverse (1959-now)

II. Major design changes with obvious color changes:
    1. Wheat, copper color (1909-42, 44-58)
    2. Wheat, steel color (1943)
    3. Memorial, copper color (1959-now)

III. Major design changes with major metal changes:
    1. Wheat, copper (1909-42, 44-58)
    2. Wheat, steel (1943)
    3. Memorial, copper (1959-82)
    4. Memorial, zinc (1982-now)

IV. Major design changes, major metal changes, major designer's initials changes
    1. Wheat, VDB on reverse (1909)
    2. Wheat, no VDB on reverse (1909-42, 44-58)
    3. Wheat, steel (1943)
    4. Memorial, copper (1959-82)
    5. Memorial, zinc (1982-now)

    V. Major design changes with minor metal changes:
    1. Wheat, 95% copper, 5% tin/zinc (1909-42, 47-58)
    2. Wheat, zinc-coated steel (1943)
    3. Wheat, 95% copper, 5% zinc (no tin) (1944-46)
    4. Memorial, 95% copper, 5% tin/zinc (1959-62)
    5. Memorial, 95% copper, 5% zinc (no tin) (1962-82)
    6. Memorial, 99.2% zinc, 0.8% copper (1982-now)

VI. As above, with all designer's initials' changes:
    1. Wheat, VDB on reverse (1909)
    2. Wheat, no VDB (1909-17)
    3. Wheat, VDB on obverse, 95% copper, 5% tin/zinc (1918-42, 47-58)
    4. Wheat, VDB on obverse, zinc-coated steel (1943)
    5. Wheat, VDB on obverse, 95% copper, 5% zinc (no tin) (1944-46)
    6. Memorial, 95% copper, 5% tin/zinc (1959-62)
    7. Memorial, 95% copper, 5% zinc (no tin) (1962-82)
    8. Memorial, 99.2% zinc, 0.8% copper (1982-now)
