Hey guys....
Highend just opened a 1972 topps wax box of
baseball cards. He was kind enough to share
his experience on these boards.
Has anyone else here ripped open packs/boxes from
1968-1975 recently ?
I would enjoy hearing what kind of cards you
pulled from packs. Was it worth it ?
Do you wish you still had them sealed ?
I would never open mine, but I don't hear
too many stories from people who rip this
stuff open.
For those of you who missed highends story,
his wife bought him a box of 1972 high series from bbcexchange
for father's day. Shall we start a Mrs. Highend fund ?

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
last weekend i ripped open an entire box of 72 topps bb series 3, my wife bought (paid cash ) it for me as an early fathers day gift, i was browsing the BBCARDEXCHANGE site and mentioned how cool would it be to rip that baby open. next thing, it was on the way.
the box was obviously case fresh and yielded about what i had expected. half of the cards were rejects o/c, m/c, st. aside from that i pulled some of the nicest 72's i have ever laid eyes on. of the 80 or so cards i submitted i hope to have at least 30-40 psa 9 's and maybe a few of 10's .
in one of the first packs i pulled a clemente and clemente ia that are locks for PSA 9. i probably should have stopped there, but i was eager to see if could pull an aaron ia in psa 9 then sell it to a fellow 72 registry member for an obscene amount of money. the 2 aaron ia i pulled were both too off center for a 9 grade (one may pull an unqualified 8 if eye appeal is weighed) i did pull a regular aaron that should be a 9 and i plan to keep it for my set. i had also hoped to pull a mcrae ia psa 9 candidate for my set but didn't.
having said that, in a financial sense it was a losing proposition but the thrill factor far outweighed any monetary loss.
i recently opened a 75 topps mini box that i also bought from bbcexchange last year. the thrill of opening these old packs from the earliest year i can remember buying baseball cards was definitely worth it. i didnt get any younts but i did get a very sharp brett although it is slightly oc. i have a nice stack ready to submit for grading when psa runs one of those specials again, and i have some free time! i think i have a bunch of 9's, lots of 8's, and a few 10's. i sent in a couple to get my feet wet and i rec'd a 9 munson, 8 jackson and 8 seaver. there were a few cards that were severely miscut and some with very bad centering, but the bulk were at least psa 8. i used to never open up the old packs/boxes but there seems to be a lot of the 75's around recently.

Of course, I had to have a '71 pack to go with it, and '72's were pretty special too, then '61 was my birth year, so... you know how it goes. A pack here, a pack there, and pretty soon you've got a box of 'em.
Maybe I"ll rip 'em on my 50th.

<< <i>Ok, maybe sacrilege was too strong a word to use. I bought some '70 Topps 4th series packs a few years ago from another board member, as they were the first packs I had bought in July '70. I had the intention of opening them with the 2 guys I used to collect with back then for my 40th birthday. But the more I looked at the packs the more I thought I"d miss the memory of how they looked when I plunked down my dime on the counter, and was afraid it would be a few moments of fun that I"d regret. So they sat and sat until they finally went off to GAI, to help prevent their opening in a tequilla induced wave of nostalgia.

That's amazing. My very first bb card pack I bought as a kid was in July 1970 (I was 10). I remember it well, it was at Marble Farms in Syracuse, NY and I still have the cards from that pack (as well as the handful of others I bought that summer and the following one). I'm currently going through my 1970 set that I completed in 1984 to see how many good cards I have. I was remembering back to my first pack and thinking that no cards were ever handled or looked at more than the ones that I bought that summer. I remember pouring over the yellow stat box and memorizing everything just for the fun of it.
It is too bad (but expected) that nowadays we have to treat vintage cards like an ancient antique instead of actually playing with them like we used to. But I guess that's what this thread is about and I would love to open a 1970 or 1971 bb or fb again just to capture a brief moment of my childhood.

It would be a lot cheaper to buy a Big Wheel and ride around the block a couple of times.
