I feel sorry for these people....

I was bored and was doing a search for "card grading" to see exactly how many different card companies were out there and what some of their company's motto were to get a laugh.

I came across AGS (Advance Grading Specialist) and I felt bad for the people who actually paid these prices......remind you that anything in an AGS 10 holder is just god awful.

>>>AGS CARDS MEET HIGH BOOK PRICES

FINDLAY, Ohio--Oct. 19, 2000 -- Recent trading on national television’s Shop At Home program of three Advanced Grading Specialists graded cards have vindicated the public’s confidence in the new firm’s products.

A 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey, Jr., Rookie (AGS-10) sold for $3,000. A 1986 Fleer Update Barry Bonds Rookie (AGS-10) sold for $2,500. Both prices were the high book value listed in Beckett’s Sports Collectibles.

Another impressive sale was a 1989 Donruss Baseball’s Best Sosa Rookie (AGS-10) for $1,800.

AGS graded cards have been moving at very representative prices on e-Bay as well as on Shop At Home and at shows. A sample of recent e-Bay trades include:

1998 E-X Century Manning (AGS-10) sold for $127.50.

1997 Pinnacle Inside Cheryl Swoopes (AGS-10) sold for $209.47.

1998 Bowman’s Best Refractor Peyton Manning (AGS-10) sold for $202.50.

1987 Topps Tiffany Barry Bonds (AGS-10) sold for $122.49.

1996 Bowman’s Best Kobe Bryant (AGS-10) sold for $148.49.

Advanced Grading Specialists has a staff of full-time graders with from 10 to 25 years in the field. Customers have rapidly discovered that AGS provides consistent, accurate grading of cards. <<<<

The last line kinda cracked me up.

What I can't figure out is why gem is so popular compared to the other 3rd tier companies. Do a search for any major 80's card, and you'll see several gem graded cards. They're almost always 10's. You rarely see cards from the other alphabet soup companies even though they also grade just about everything a 10. Why? Did gem have some marketing strategy that I'm not aware of?

Hmm. I bet it's Ken Goldin thats "Buying" these cards. Drum up interest for the next time they run these same auctions, albeit with the exact same cards they "sold out of" in the last auction. I can just hear Don West now.. "And these Ken Griffey Jr cardsssss sold out last time we had'em on at $3000 a piece!!!! Thats as good or better than any company on the market." Ken Goldin(k) chimes in over the phone (how cheesy that was too) "That's right Don, and remember this is the premier Gem Mint 10 grade, and we only have a few"

    LOL

Funny too, I just bought a PSA 10 Bonds Fleer Update for $315. Guess I should crossover to AGS and sell it. Anyone have their address???

By the way, wasn't shop at home the "parent" company of WGC? They sold those Bonds rookies all the time in those WGC(WCG?) holders all the time. They had like 18000 of them in 10 holders...

Did you notice the date? Almost 4 years ago, there is no way anyone in their right mind would pay $2500 for a Fleer Update Bonds card, graded 10 by anyone, let alone a sham like "AGS". Can this be true?

I don't know...does anyone want to trust their cards with a guy who needs a magnifying glass just to find the cards in a bin?

CT, I saw the date......I remember when they first came out and all their marketing campaign thru various publication.....everyone thought they were going to be the real deal. They only thing good about them was the attractive holder and that was it. That all fell apart within a couple months. I remembered I bought an AGS 10 card. It was the Shaq Stadium Club rc. Wasted $20 just to get a looksie and it was nasty. Chipping up and down the edges and crappy corners (PSA 6 or 7 at best). I sent AGS an email and told them they sucked and were blind....never got a response....gee. I sometimes wonder about those individuals that spent that kind of money and what they got in return.....I doubt they recouped any of it or even lucky to get back 10% of what they paid.....ie the first
BGS 9.5 SP Derek Jeter $35,000. The last one just sold for $3,000. Do you think this guy is running around with Mickey Mouse ears mumbling with a sawed-off shotgun?
