The year is 2004.....

but some of the coins seen in TPG slabs lately reminds me of the over grading that happened in the 80's by dealers during the Hot market then. Can this be so ?

A bunch of 67's and 68's sure have been popping up in the last year within the series I collect. Have any other classic collectors noticed this also within their series ?

Guess it is just changing grade standards to reflect what the market wants. image

I haven't been active enough to be able to say myself but posts suggesting that this is happening have been becoming worrisome. I'd like to hear some comments regarding non-moderns from people who are actively in the market.

The population of 68s in the Merc series has risen in the past year. I dont have the exact numbers, but if someone has the current total 68 population I have an old PCGS population report to compare it with.

    Pop is 95 in MS68, 317 in MS68FB.

I would guess, without seeing a pop report, the majority of the 68's would be the 39-D. That hoard came out in 1996 or so...as I recall. Many pretty toned ones....

45-S. There was a big hoard of them.

    Hmm...must have been recent.

Either way, then it really isn't an "overgrading" problem as much as it is a hoard that hit the market. Unless, of course, the graded 45-Ds were actually seen and considered overgraded. image
