SSP- Krause ANA Centennial special edition boxed set (2 HARDCOVER volumes, covering 1701-1990)

I bought these books for $140 in 1993 or so. Back then, it was the only way you could get coverage into the 1700's (and 1600's coverage did not come until 1997, by which time Krause had started breaking the volumes up by century.) They paid for themselves many, many times over. Here's a great way to get info on practically every coin from every country in the world, from 1701 up until the books were compiled- a readymade numismatic library in one box.

These are two volumes in their original box, not mint condition by any means, but decent. Since they are hardcover and the pages were a bit heavier and stronger than the usual onionskin, flimsy paper used in the current "telephone books", they held up well. I used 'em for a decade.

Now, the ANA Centennial was in 1991, I believe, and the book compiled in about 1990, so some of the prices will be a little out of date, and the categories listed will reflect the political map of the times (i.e., the Berlin Wall had just come down, all Russian coins, including Imperial issues, were listed under U for "USSR", and of course the USSR had not yet splintered into a bunch of smaller republics with unpronounceable names.)

HOWEVER, these books are still useful, and who knows, maybe collectible in their own right? Another nice thing about them is that each country's coinage is listed from 1701-1990 in order - if you are going through a mixed group of Brit halfpennies, let's say, and you have a 1757, an 1888, and a 1931, you don't have to go fumbling through three different books- they're all right there in the same section. The split between the two volumes in this set is alphabetical, not chronological. Volume 1 is A through I and Volume 2 is I through Z.

I have kept these long after switching to more recent volumes, mostly out of sentimental reasons and because they are easier to tote around than three separate paperback volumes (they're heavy, but when they are slid into the box they tote nicely). I have no idea what to ask for them, or if anyone is interested in them. I think they are the only Krause catalogs that were issued in hardcover, and the bindings are a handsome dark green with gold lettering on the spines. I know that if Krause would do a special boxed set of the current volumes with the four centuries covered in separate hardcover books, I would cheerfully spend the extra money to have 'em. But I don't guess that'll happen soon. (But I'll bet they could sell a lot of them to libraries, if they did.)

Sorry- I'm rambling. Anyway, if you are interested in these and have a cash or trade offer for them, please PM me.

What, the books, or the coins listed?

The books, no. Some of the coins listed, yes. image

Ooh. I can see that this has generated some tremendous interest. image

Ah, well. Our public library needs some coin reference books- maybe I'll give 'em to my Dad (he's the Assistant Director there.)

Speak up if you're interested. Otherwise, it's off to the Three Rivers Regional Library with 'em.

You know Rob, if you had put "giveaway" in the title instead of SSP, they would have found a home already. image

Well, I'm giving away a gold coin in another thread, and it has had surprisingly few entries (for a gold coin giveaway, anyhow)... so maybe it's just slow around here.
