I worked hard to squeak JackTheKnife out of spot 32...

...and this dude shows up and puts me back down to 33.

Wow, nice set.

  • I feel your pain LincolnCentMan!!! My Niece's fell to 81.

  • Yes, and he's not done yet. Rumor has it that this set is going straight to top 5, maybe top 3. In the next day or so it should all be up.
Like I said before, it's very difficult to just tread water these days.

LOOKING FOR 1931-s merc that is nice for the grade and fb

  • Don,

You're so cruel. I'm in denial that I'm sinking (and fast). I better wake up and realize that this is a big boys game. Thanks for the wake up call. image

    ...I know. I'm sinking... lol.

Jack, look at the bright side. When ever you finaly sell out, set complete or not, the profit will lessen the coins departure.

Even though I've dropped from 44 to 51 since January, the quality of my set has improved tremendously. It used to be my 09-s-vdb and 14-d were the only pre-1917 coins I had (out of a bunch) that I liked, now I have about 13 coins in that span that I like. image I'm sure David's set has similarly improved... maybe your's too Jack, but finding coins for your set is a whole different ball game than it is for ours!

  • haletj,

It's not so much finding the coins for my set as it is paying for them. There is so much pressure on the tough dates in high grade that the prices are prohibitive. I think the coins are out there to be had, but people with much deeper pockets are buying them. Just watch the upcoming ANR sale. There is a group of Lincolns in that sale that is going to smash what little reality remains in Lincoln cent prices.

Yeah, okay. I know how you feel. I really want to get 23-s and 24-d and 25-s in full red, but they've started to go for more than I can afford. I lost out on opportunities to get them a yr or so ago because of not enough money or just plain didn't bid enough.

You always have to watch out for Sandbaggers they'll get you every time.

If you don't have the top coin you can be sure someone dose, and their just waiting to nail you.

    I don't buy slabs I make them

  • Melikecoins,

Are you making a case for closing a set? I have thought about this lately. If someone knows you are after coins x, y, and z and they have coin y, they may hold out on the price or shill you at auction. However, proponents of leaving a set open will say that you should only pay what you are willing to pay, end of story. I am not sure what the right answer is, but I agree with your "sandbagger" comment.
  • I'll say that is a great set...!!!

I keep upgrading and not gaining, it will take several upgrades for me to move up one slot. About a year or so ago I was in the top ten. I have upgraded several coins since then, but am now in 13th (for the moment/ when I checked a few seconds ago...!). It is great to see all the interest even though it is tough
to make any headway (mostly due to HIGH PRICES)... Keep on, keepin' on...

Well, he finally finished putting the coins in. Now he's in the number three spot. Geez!!! At this rate, in two years, it's going to take a 100% complete dominatly 64RD or better set to make the top twenty page.

    David
  • Truely a GREAT new set added to the registry....!

Took me back down to 14th. At this rate it won't take 2 years before you will have to be 100% complete and 64 Red and better to be on the first page (top 20).

The top "8" have a 68+ GPA....!!! If only I could win the lottery...

I too would have to win the lottery just to compete. That is why I'm working on a raw set.I refuse to pay the kind of money it would take to play with the big dogs.Unless I win the lottery, that is.image Then I'd have to change my thinking.

I paid my idiot tax yesterday. I bought ten lotto tickets. The jackpot was 145M.... some dude in El Paso hit it. Let's see. Lets say the guy has 100M left after taxes, and gets a 3% intrest. That would put him at making 3M a year off intrest... What's up with that?

    David
  • I didn't win either.
But with the cash option the winner only gets about half, if they put it in a trust account, and only pa income tases on what they take out, the tax bite would be a lot nicer.
You need a trust account so that the government doesn't claim their 75% inheritance tax on the winnings should you die from all that fun spending it.image

Its not the "not winning" that bothers me. Its the not winning any money at all on my twenty tickets that made me mad.

But even if I did win a big money jackpot, I doubt there would be enough money to build the kind of set I have always dreamt of building.
