Unopened Proof sets

I was at the local coin store a couple of months ago and bought a 1956 unopened proof set (in additionto an opened one.

I asked him if he had anymore unopened sets and he said he had just got a box (50 sets) of 1962 proof sets. This was on Monday and he had just got them on Saturday. I did buy them and have been deciding wheter to open them or not.

I haven't done anything with them yet.

If anyone is interested in them I would entertain an offer on all or maybe in lots of 10 sets or so. He indicated they came from a lady in Bend (Central) Oregon. The name on the box was removed.

I would also entertain an offer on the 1956 unopened proof set or the the opened one for that matter.

I hate to tell you this, but I have never seen an original proof set (in the envelope) from the mint, that was sealed.
I have seen a number of them offered on Ebay as sealed, but I don't believe it.
I personally do not trust a "sealed" envelope.
On the other hand, the boxed sets were sealed with tape.

  • As far all the proof sets not being sealed from the mint.

I DO NO BELIEVE THAT. In the old days you couldn't sell an unopened proof set,. So they tended to open them.

And as the price for the unopened 1956 proof set. I am working on it with somone right now.

Unopened proof sets in envelopes always raise a red flag for me. You have to be really cautious. Many so-called "never opened" proof set envelopes are not really so. Replacement envelopes have been made by the thousands, and defective sets sealed inside. I've even seen a case where an "unopened" set was opened, to find a bunch of steel washers inside. Also, I have many sets that I've opened carefully, and I could re-seal them with virtually no sign of tampering. Bottom line: you're really buying a "pig in a poke" with them. Will the seller take them back if you open them and find problems???image

sorry, but people manufacture new envelopes just for this purpose...not to mention older ones are easy to open and reseal, as Ive done so MANY TIMES..dont ever believe a set hasnt been opened. Only gaurentees are SEALED BOXES UNOPENED FROM THE MINT...these cannot be toyed with. If you believe anything else then your a sucker id like to sell some land to image

    Thanks, nankraut and pontiacinf...
I was beginning to feel like I was the only one who new this.
I have argued with many a dealer about this, but I have talked to people who worked at the mint, years ago, and they assured me that, the mint, as a rule, has never sealed envelopes that had to be "licked" image

  • i believe our ad in the coin world says we're paying $10 to $10.50 for these. (1962 p.s.) envelopes need to be perfect though, just like they came from the mint yesterday.

For those that have questioned this, let me explain:

According to the information that I was given, all of the mint sets in envelopes that had the standard "Lick-type" seal, were left unsealed.
(They did not have the time or the saliva to seal them... image
There may have been a few that got sealed, but most were not. (We all know how the mint is )
These are not to be confused with the resealable type that I have also seen. I' only talking about the lickable seal type that has never been licked!image
I have a complete set of Proof Sets from 1953 to 2004, plus many more, and none of them have ever been sealed. The majority of the sets ranging from 55-64 that I have seen, were unsealed, but I have seen a number of them, in the last year or so, that were sealed and the envelopes looked brand new.
I admit, I have also seen some of the older envelopes that were sealed, but all of them had low quality coins in them. Every one!!! image
In my opinion, if one of these sets is sealed, there is probably a good reason for it.
However, please don't get me wrong, the original boxed mint sets were all sealed with tape at the mint and I have purchased a number of these, and even opened a few. I was even pleasantly surprised at what I found in some of them.

untoyed with ones are sometimes sealed due to heat and moisture..and can be easily opened and resealed...ones not selaed this way just open...then theres the new replacement envelopes one sees on ebay alot...

Im not trying to make anyone look the idiot, but seriously, unless its a sealed mint box, forget it!

    Jim,

Don't get me wrong...I'm not trying to spoil your sales.
I am simply trying to help educate people about the subject...to try to keep them from making some of the same mistakes that I have made.
Nobody ever warned me about these...I had to learn the hard way image
I surely hope, when you do finally open them, that you will indeed find some doosies...image
However, having said that, I highly doubt that this will be the case.
If you do find some nice coins, send me some scans, and maybe, I will buy some of them from you.
But, I will not buy them as sealed. You are not going to exact a Premium for them as SEALED. Not knowing what is known.
You would, more than likely, observe higher sale prices, in this case, if the buyer could see what he was getting.
If these were sealed Boxed Proof sets, it would be an entirely different story.
I hope you will accept my humble apology, if I have caused you any grief or lost you any sales.

  • I wasn't going to reply to this but alas I must.

I am sorry you seem to hav e been taken in the past. And I guess that you truly are trying to defend something (I don't know what).
And you said you are sorry that you might be affecting my sales , but quite frankly I feel like oening them self an taking you up on the offer.

But in the meantime enjoy your collecting!
