1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Question....

Just looking over some dream cards up for auction and came across a nice Mantle. Scans are really large but the top and bottom edges caught my eye. Around the front left corner you see the edge dip as well as the bottom edge. I've seen that on cards that have been trimmed (have a wave in them). Did 52 have cuts like that? I've seen other Mantles and there are off cuts and OC but haven't noticed the edges dip like that. Just curious....

looks like a diamond cut to me, it also appears closer to an ex 5 then a nmnt 7 no?
    Good for you.

I would guess the appearance of the dipping edges can be attributed to the scan because if they were trimmed, that card would have never been holdered by PSA. I think a 7 is a very generous grade for this card though, considering the diamond cut, the print defect right in the middle of the background, and somwhat advanced corner wear on the lower right corner, as well as upper left, which can be seen by looking at the scan of the back of the card. I'd bet they'd give it a 6 if it was resubmitted, so ultimately, you'd be buying the holder more-so than the card itself.

It looks more like a dome-cut!

I think the slight "curvature" of the top (like you said, "dome-cut") might be due to the little "ridge" or whatever on the inside top of the slab.. it appears to just barely be touching the top edge of the card, so I wonder if that could have some kinda optical illusion effect??

That's what I'm thinking. The ridge can magnify and distort the edge like a magnifying glass would. I guess we could call this a 1952 Topps Refractor; the very first one ever produced!

I agree. It's definitely an optical illusion caused by the edge of the card touching the ridge in the slab and appearing to be magnified a bit. I disgaree on the grade. The card's only flaws appear to be a slight diamond cut and some corner wear. 7 may be a little lenient, but it's accurate.
  • Card looks fine and accurately graded to me if anyone out tas 952 highs in PSA 5 that look as nice as this please contact me.

How is this optical illusion made? I for one have seen thousands of scans over the years and have never seen an optical illusion like this. Check out this sellers other auctions, he has a lot of 52 PSA graded cards and I can't find any with that type of illusion.
