As mentioned in the Vintage forum on this, I am confused. Is 12x SMR expected or realistic on this card?

The AS cards from the 1970 set are among the toughest to find in high grade. Centering is almost always a problem. These cards are tough. If I was still working on the set, I'm sure that I would have put up that kind of cash for a few of the AS's in PSA 8. That said, it is a lot of money and it may not ever be seen again, but this remains one tough card to find in high grade.

I was watching that as well as your 1971 Rose. Nice job on both, my generous snipes weren't even in the ballpark!

JEB is correct. I'm not sure if there's another Topps subset with such O/C cards on average as these. I have some other beautiful A/S's but most if not all would grade O/C. I have heard from several on this board that the Bench in particular is quite desirable, and a look at registry entries would confirm this.

I am not surprised at the winning bid. I was not quite sure where it would end up, but I thought it might be strong as some of the 'biggies' in the registry could use the card............and if a 67 Detemer(?) can fetch almost $1200 from strong bidders, why can't a desirable Bench get $400 from the same?

When the' biggies' are at the table, you can throw the SMR right out the window.

I'm not surprised at all by the final value. There are only ten 8's with one 9. That's extremely low for a vintage card, HOFer, Cincy Red. So you have 1970 complete set collectors, Bench collectors, Reds collectors and HOF collectors all going at this card. I've owned 4 or 5 high grade 1970 sets in recent years and I still need many of the All Star cards. In fact, I purchased one set mainly because the Bench was well centered and mint. I ended up getting an 8 on it but it's very close to a 9. You'll also pay alot if you want the Yaz or Rose all star cards. They're nearly as tough as this one.
