56 Elston Howard PSA 10

Link to der auction

I understand that Peter Lalos is a reputable dealer, and the point of this thread is by no means a jab at him, since I have heard nothing but good things.

That being said - how on earth did this card pull the grade it did? I consider myself a pretty good judge of grades from about 1970-on, but WOW. So many things just out at me - the rough cut on 2 edges and the misalignment of the yellow ink for starters. The centering is great, and it is a card I would love to own once I start my '56 set in a few years, but jeezy peezy - imagine submitting an 89 Upper Deck like this and the grade it would receive.

Heres 10 cents my 2 cents is free.

the rough cuts seem fine but the corners look marginal.

I've tried to do research on past threads to see why this might happen.

    I got:

    "Grading is subjective."

    and

    "Mistakes happen."

I'm not sure if murcerfan can provide any detail to this....

I think you have been looking at to many 80s cards.

It looks really nice to me....

This has been debated before but moderate rough cuts do not de- value vintage cards. It shows a lack of handling. If anything, it might add value.

  • If not mistaken Peter Lalos previously owned this card and put it in the Nationals with Superior last year. Funny how he has the card back.

It looks nice to me. Scans can make corners look soft sometimes as well.

Yes, that card sold for $2185 [incl. 15% fee] in the 2003 Superior National auction. I think it looks great.

I'm in the minority here I guess. The cards two top corners don't look gem-mint to me. Looks more like a nine -
regardless of the rough cut borders. Grading is subjective and opinions are like....nevermind...

If it were an opc card , then 10 it.
I would value it on par with a 9 personally.
It is nice to see high grade cards that "fill-up" the holder though.

FWIW - vintage 10s are a tough, tough thing to find. Some are overgraded - sometimes with provenance dating back to certain collections. However - given the rareness of true vintage PSA 10s, combined with the popularity of Yankees cards - one should seriously question why any dealer would be sitting on such a card in their investory for a period of time that can be measured in *years*.

Peter Lalos has been a very reputable dealer with whom I've had positive transactions - but I think common sense on this issue is more than enough to consider the concerns that some might have with a card such as this.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I think PSA got it right and it is graded accurately. Although not sure any of us can really discern the difference between MINT and GEM MINT. It is an extremely nice card.
