Chances on mint set Washingtons going MS67

As I am new to much of this thought I'd throw out a question. I know slabbing is a crap shoot but
what are the chances of mint set quarters (1951-64) being slabbed MS 67 by one of the preffered services?
I noticed Boom has some listed on an eBay auction and was wondering the opinion of some of you "seasoned veteran coin gurus" Thanks.image

    Welcome, Rick,

I purchased five mint sets last year (the first time since 1996), and there was not a single coin in the lot that would have gone over 65, and the 65 coins would have been few and far between. I seem to find better coins in circulation than that stuff from the Mint Sets. If you try, let us know your results.

  • Depends on the year and the sets have to be sealed
unsearched sets to have a chance

There were a lot of changes to mint sets after 1964 which increased the chance of the best coins
going into the sets but did little or nothing to improve the average quality of the coins. The earlier
sets didn't seem to get quite as good a strike as the later ones but they may be a little cleaner.
With the clad sets there's generally about 2% of the coins which are nice gems which is far higher
than what you'd find elsewhere. It's probably about the same for the silver quarters in the older sets
but the gems aren't as likely to be among the best for the date. I've seen lots of very clean quarters
in the '64 sets but many of these had weak strikes (especially reverse). Otherwise quality seemed
to trend down a little as the silvers drew to an end.

Expect to buy quite a few sets before you will find an exceptional coin.

I was buying quite a few 1970's era mint sets (sets in original mint box or sealed envelope) in order to upgrade my IKE dollar collection and had about a 4 to 5 percent return on getting an IKE above MS65

Good luck and let us know how well you do.
