UPDATED with Grades - Multi-board member PCGS submission w/ grading guesses

UPDATED BELOW WITH GRADES - We weren't too far off

A few months ago I was visiting my Dad and he had a few old coins that I thought would be worth sending in for economy grading. The trouble was, we didn't have enough to meet the 5 coin minimum so the plan was to hold off until I had enough to send in and meet the minimum. But I'm still in the hunt for gold and nothing meeting the economy requirements is in the plan.

So a week ago, I put a post out at 10:00pm asking if a board member had an extra coin that they wanted to join along in the submission. In less than 15 minutes, I got numerous replies and had to pull the plug! It seems that PCGS has a massive demand for economy submissions with less than 5 coins. Also, by grouping the coins, we can spread the cost of the registered mail fees and everyone will pay a more reasonable regular insured fee (if they wish) on their return postage. I have no doubt that if this was kept open for 24 hours over 20 board members would have participated but it would have turned a small project into a big one! Might be fun to do some day just for the heck of it, but plenty of paperwork, digital pics of the coins for documentation in case they are lost in the mail, individual packaging on the back end, etc. I'm glad to do it this time to help my Dad and these folks have been so appreciative in PMs to get their 1 and 2 coin submissions in. For some, this is their first submission to PCGS.

So here is the submission and grading guesses. We'll be sure to follow-up when the grades arrive (2-3 months?). I'm sure this will be an interesting tray for the graders given the diverse group of coins - classic to modern; Good 4 to PR68DC.

Elgringoe (my Dad and new board member) / Blade
1835 1/2 cent VF30 *** PCGS grade VF30BN
1798 1 cent Fine 15 (could BB due to porous planchet) *** PCGS grade BB Environmental Damage
1853 1 cent MS63BN (could BB due to surface color) *** PCGS grade MS61BN
1909 VDB 1 cent MS5RD *** PCGS grade MS66RD cha-ching!

Bearcave
1939 1 cent MS67RD *** PCGS grade MS66RD
1981-S TyII PR68DC *** PCGS grade Ty I PR 68DC

Bikingnut
1940 25cent MS65 *** PCGS grade MS63

Catch 22
1855-S 50 cent Good 4 *** PCGS grade AG03
1878-CC 50 cent Good 6 *** PCGS grade G06

Spinynorman
1929-S 5 cent MS64 *** PCGS grade MS64

Wish us luck! I think this is a great idea for anyone else that wants to group partial packages in the future. It will probably take me an extra hour or two, but that's a lot better than $30/coin when you don't have the minimum 5 required for economy.

I do, but then again, I'm biased.

Good luck. I wish I could have gotten in with you on the submission, but I'm also out of money at the moment... image

It is an interesting and practical idea only if members live close enough to each other or see each other at shows so that the coins can be delivered to the submitter and back to the owners in person. If you have to ship your coins to the member doing the submitting you lose any savings in postage and insurance fees.

I really thought this would be fun. It will be interesting to see how they come out and I did not have to have the 5 coins to send in.

Same here. When I saw the post, I jumped on it. My 40P Washington isn't worth the extra charge to send it in on a regular submission.

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

Same here. I'll be into it for less than $25, $35 if I get the bump and have it returned registered. Definitely worth it to me. Thanks for your time in putting this together, Tom.

    Condor,
This makes a lot of economic sense. Here are the 2 options if you have 1 coin, valued at $200, for PCGS grading.

Option 1 - regular submission: $5 insured shipping to PCGS + $30 regular grading fee + $12.50 PCGS registered return postage = $47.50

Option 2 - group submission: $5 insured shipping to group + $2 share of group shipping to PCGS + $16 economy grading fee
+ $3 share of PCGS registered return postage + $5 insured shipping back to submitter = $31

In this case, I didn't charge the board members postage to or from PCGS since I was already sending coins there, only the grading fee and cost to get the coins back to them. But the economics hold all the way through. Of course, the wait is a couple months longer.

  • What a great idea! I have a few coins I want to send in for an economy crossover grading. If you're interested, read my thread here for details.

To make it more interesting, I'm also going to take donations to let some YNs submit along with us for free...

Hi blade and thanks for posting this again. I caught the grades earlier today. (I'm like Russ, check every few minutes image )

We did all right with the coins, about what we expected. Sure thought I had a Type 2 SBA tho. image

I guess Papa Tony was right about his 1939 Lincoln.

I would be interested in something like this again if you are ever interested. I could even do the dirty work. image

Blade, thanks mucho and let's do this again. With all the shows coming up I suspect turnaround times are going to get long until December. Post a pic of that VDB!
