whats your best deal,,,, raw to graded ???

heres my example; a guy on ebay has a 1974 topps card listed, like this, "1974 topps johnny bench" I did not have his 74 #10 card
for my set, so i say lets check out this raw 74 maybe its worth grading ? i watch as the card slowly loads up (phone modem) i`m thinking
this is no topps #10 J. B. Its a 1974 topps deckle edge, scan looked really good too. their were only 6 bidders, i won the card for $48.00
I keep it for awhile, then say, what the heck, go ahead and get it graded. heres my $48.00 1974 topps deckle edge.
my friends, this is a true story !! lets here yours !!

  • I bought a '99 Bowman's Best Locker Room Auto of Pat Burrell for about $20 2 years ago or so. This is when the card booked for like $30 and he was coming off a breakout year. His cards were scorching. Anyway, after it came in the mail, I looked at it closely and felt it had a good shot at a BGS 9.5 I submitted the card and sure enough, it was graded a BGS 9.5 I submitted this card along with another raw card I purchased off Ebay, a 2001 Pacific Impressions ( Hobby ) Michael Vick RC/99. This card is printed on canvas so I thought maybe a 9, a 9.5 was a long shot. Bam! The Vick graded a 9.5 also. I listed them both on Ebay and they sold for around $350-$400 each if I could remember right. This was without a scan of either card. I didn't own a scanner at the time. I have had pretty good luck with Ebay raw cards. I have a pretty good eye i think.

I also just got back a '04 Heritage Carlos Quentin Retrofractor/555 from PSA. I sent 2 of the 4 raw cards I purchased off Ebay in last week. I received a PSA 9, and a PSA 10. Not bad, this guy is on fire and hitting homers left and right. I also bought a '02 Fleer Focus Jersey Edition David Garrard "Jersey Numbers" RC off Ebay. It is a parallel of his RC and it is limited to as many copies as his jersey #. My card is serial numbered 6/9 on back. Anyway, I sent it in and it got a PSA 9. Not bad for a limited card. The only other was a '00 H.S All American Jason Stokes Auto that I paid $15 for off Ebay. I just got that back as a PSA 10 also.

Those are some of my success stories. Thanks for letting me share them.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

I bought a raw Tiger Woods Master card for 8 bucks, and sold it as an SGC 92 (before PSA graded them) for around 1200.

That will not beat what that Bench will bring .... just wait til a Bench guy sees it.

    Either
1951 Connie Mack All-Star Mickey Cochrane purchased raw on eBay for $75 and slabbed as PSA 5 (at the time there were none higher, now there is a PSA 7) - not listed in SMR, but estimated $250 to $300 value
    or
1940 Play Ball Charlie Gehringer purchased raw on NAXCOM as VG or better for $23 and slabbed as PSA 6 (SMR $110).

I bought a 1970 Milton Bradley set complete with box for about $60.00 about two years ago. The cards were described as being in really great shape, mostly in nrmt condition.

The Rose is now a PSA 10, The Aaron is a PSA 10, the Clemente, Jackson, and Mays are PSA 9's. I still need to get the others graded.

Not too much high dollar stuff here, but I did submit a 1990 Fleer and 1989 UD Ryan that had been sitting in cheap 9 pocket holders for 14 years. The holders were even starting to turn a gross looking shade of yellow.

  • Around 1979 I traded an X-wing fighter and some Star Wars figures for a brown paper bag (supermarket size) that was half full with baseball cards. The only card in particular that I remember being in the bag was a 1967 Mantle.

Fun thread! I won a group of 5 mid grade 1962 Bell Brands with Drysdale, Snider, Roseboro, Moon and Podres for 30 bucks. The description said an extra Moon would be included. When the cards arrived, I set the extra Moon aside, sent it in for grading last month and here it is:

Numerous early to mid 70s hockey sets for about $200 raw that turned many PSA 8, 9, and 10s on $5 specials. 8s went for $10-$15, 9s for $25 +, and a few 10s at $149. Not a bad ROI any day.

  • Last summer I purchased (4) raw cards from one particular seller. He had nice large clear scans adn had a money back guarantee. I called him before the auction ended and asked him why the cards were not already holdered and he said he was selling them on consignment for a friend and that his friend did not want to take the time or money to have them graded.

    1. 1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle - Paid $900 and the card is now in a GAI 8.5 holder. It was in a PSA 8 holder but I thought it really had a shot at a 9 so I submitted to GAI and got the 8.5

    2. 1952 Topps #37 Duke Snider - Paid $600 now in a GAI 8 holder.

    3. 1952 Topps #122 Jackie Jensen - Paid $48 now is in a PSA 8 holder.

    4. 1956 Topps Football #176 Shortprinted Checklist - Paid $88 and it now rests in a PSA 8 holder.

I also purchased a raw 1959 Topps #478 Clemente off of Ebay a couple of years ago for $144. The guys listed it as MINT but had an awful picture with it. It now rests in a PSA 9 holder.
