Clever way they worked the traditional Soviet hammer & sickle theme into this one!

Yeah the figure, titled "Let Us Beat Swords Into Plowshares" by Evgeniy Vuchetich, was donated by the U.S.S.R in 1959 and is located in a park across the street from the U.N.

Be careful collecting the Russian commems, you could spend a lifetime on that quest.image

The Russian coins are so beautiful and well struck - and the choices abound!!!! I think the Russian and Ukrainian commems. are the best designed and struck that you can find.

Really, Shep, you may be right. The Soviets really funded the arts strongly, even if they did overdo art deco into "Soviet modern." I've picked up a number of Soviet and Russian art medals and frankly their commemorative coins rival anything in their medal series. The Leningrad Mint was especially prolific in the latter.

Yeah, I could just see the US Mint workers' reaction to that sort of outsourcing. image

For these who likes Russian stuff I'm posting here very helpfull link to database to ALL Russian Comms.coins, beginning from 1992 -- great images and info:

Russian Central Bank Commemoartive Coins Database --just scroll up and down years 1992-2003 !

<<The Leningrad Mint was especially prolific in the latter. >> -- I'm comletely agree with you, Mark! (Especially, taking into account the fact I was born there -not into the Mint itself image -- and lived in that city 23 years of my life!) And here is the link to St Petersburg Mint:

St Petersbourg (Leningrad) Mint --- should work alos in English and Deutsch , but might not works well right now.

<<<Including medals>>> ---and here is great site about Russian medals and orders in English:

Thanks Shipcoin! I first spotted one of these coins at a 2002 Long Beach show. At that time I ran out of funds to buy it but I think it worked out for the best. image

Thanks for the links, I had lost the commemorative coin database the last time I upgraded my pc. Here's another link for medals The Soviet Military Awards Page
