The new 1901 to date Krause

cladkingcladking Posts: 28,701 ✭✭✭✭✭
They suckered me in again. Just made a quick once over but there is no big change
in the pricing of the later date coins. A few individual ones have been raised 20% to
1000% but it's few and far between and most are closer to the low end than the high.

There are supposed to be a million price changes, but the only extensive changes I've
seen are in European silver. They've added pricing in a lot of grades- - this may be
counted toward that million.

Next time I won't buy another until after I've seen the changes. Saw a few typos.

The 1965 Greek set is now valued at $95. In my 2002 it was at $25. It is now closer to it's real value. I don't know what it was valued at in the 2004 catalogue.

I looked at a copy at B&N yesterday and they still do not have the 2001 Victoria £5 in .925. Until that is listed I am not buying a new Krause!

I guess I wait another year to buy - though I will check out a copy from the library when it arrives there.

You might use this opportunity to e-mail Krause and let them know of your displeasure.

Another point might be made that recommendations have been posted to not buy the catalog.

The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

Well, I've had a little better chance to get familiar with this. There are more increases
in the later dates than I noticed ther first time through. There are still many rarities
listed for under a dollar and many of those which they did increase still list for nominal
prices, but there is a real step in the right direction. The coins I've spent more time and
effort on are less affected by the increases which affected my initial assessment.

It may not be fair to only pick at the Krause's faults since it is a great reference and
brings a huge amount of information into a single volume, but they've again moved
many countries around. The photos are not up to their usual high standards and one
must still be carefull of typos and misprints. Some coins which have always been pic-
tured no longer have pictures. Judging it by Krause's standards it's just a D+ but it
deserves a B for effort. If you need a reference book or if you have an interest in later
date circulating world coinage it is still a must.

I was really hoping this would be a better edition. I may buy it, but as much as I use Krause the money could be used for better things.

What I'd really like to see is a new Coincraft!

  • I know that they are not cheap, but since I just got back into collecting, I bought the 2005 off of BarnesandNoble.com for $38. Free S$H. I think this deal is until the 20th. Sorry if I have already posted this in it's own topic, but I wanted to make sure that if anyone bought one, they got the best deal.
