Is a stained psa 10 possible?

I recently purchased a modern, high dollar psa 10 on ebay. Card looked ok, but several days later i looked- and behold- there was some sort of stain right in the middle of the card. It looks like a small white, glue-like stain. It definitely is not on the outside of the holder. It looks like it may be on the inside part of the holder. The seller said he did not even notice this stain because he just bought it as part of a deal, and immediately put it up on ebay, without looking at it closely. My question is this: is it possible that psa can assign a 10 to a card with a possible stain, or could it have occurred as a consequence of holdering process? The holder itself does not seem to be tampered with. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

    PSA does make mistakes, yes.

Also - perhaps there wasn't a perfect seal on the card. I've heard stories and seen pictures of people:

    a) putting their PSA slabs under bright sunlight
    b) floating their PSA cards in backyard pools
    c) putting PSA cards in the washing machine
    d) trying to burn PSA holders with accelerants.

Given a huge plethora of after-market possibilities - it is fair to say that either PSA messed up originally (which is possible) or that perhaps the stain got in after-market, inadvertently.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • seal on the card is intact, if stain happened after-market somehow, it would have shown up migrating across the card, which in this case is not so. I have heard that sometimes during encapsulation, a white film like dust sometimes settles on surface of the card. Perhaps this was the case here as well, just chunkier in its residue. Should i keep the card or ask for a refund as certainly its value would be decreased?

I recently bought 2 early 1980's PSA 10's from the same dealer. Both had small stains on the front, so it does happen.

By the way, what would happen if a properly sealed PSA holder was held under water? Is the sonic seal water proof if it's sealed properly? I've never had the ambition to find out for myself.

Can a card in a psa holder get dinged up? I have a psa 10 mike bibby rookie that is dinged on the top edge. you can see white on it. Was just wondering if it was probably done before or after it was graded.

Yes, a card can get dinged while in the holder. Many cards seem to have a lot of movement within the slab, and if you really tried, I bet you could slightly ding the card while shaking the holder. I have seen many people at shows try to "straighten" a crooked card in a slab by doing just that.

The only cards I've ever had dinged were in SGC holders because of their sharp....yes, those stupid sharp black plastic inserts. It always pushed up the edges of the card. Never had a dinged card in a slabbed psa holders; although I've had the corners pinched during the encapsulation process.....and some were 10s. Guess the card moves a bit while it's getting sealed.
