Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

This is classic!

I only took notice of this because some poor soul was bragging about his card on sportscardforum

This poor kid on SCF was wondering how much his 1/1 would be worth, he was/is convinced is a several thousand dollar card. This is the same guy we had a thread about the other day, buying a Thome masterpiece unstamped and putting it up 10 days later stamped 01/01.

Lebron GU 5 clr Patch Gem Mt 10

image

Here is the description:
Description

This is a 2003 Upper Deck Rookie Exclusive #10, this card is graded a Gem-Mt 10 by Ikon Grading Service #113273, this card has a piece of 03-04 Game-Used Lebron James Rookie Cleveland Cavaliers Jersey inserted inside of the holder with the card, this is a 5-color Patch piece taken from under neath the arm pit on the side of the Jersey, THERE IS ONLY FOUR SPOTS ON THE JERSEY WHERE YOU CAN GET THIS SAME FIVE COLORS, very rare piece ... I have some of these that were 1/1 stamped, but Upper Deck would not allow me to sell them on Ebay, kinda figure's!!. So you get a plain jane Gem-Mt 10 card inside of the sealed holder, but you will also get a specialy made Soft Velvet pouch with a folded top that the card goes into, this is the nicest Lebron James set up you will ever see other than spending a few hundred on a nembered patch card from a hobby box, Card will also come with a embossed Certificate of Authenticity from IGS that has the serial number of the card on the certificate

Here is the link to the SCF thread on this if anyone is interested. I feel bad telling this kid the card is junk. I tried to be somewhat PC when I told him.

Poor sap. Though my sympathy only goes so far because the kid scooped it thinking he outsmarted the dealer and found a $5K card. Another cautionary tale on why the focus of the modern hobby is entirely in the wrong place.

What a perfect statement that is! This is why I am often disillusioned with this hobby, the goal of kids today is seemingly to find and sell the next big dollar card, and not to collect cards for the fun of it (because they are fans of the sport / player). I never even thought of such a thing when I collected cards as a kid. I am sure Ebay, dealers, and the card companies all share some of the blame here, but I would love to go back to simpler times in this hobby.

So this poor kid gets an email back from the seller after he sends him my comments. Here was the seller (ikoncards) response.

"OK, your lose if you believe what everyboby says, i do not have 8,000
positive transactions for nothing, i do create alot of buzz with my
card's, that's been going on for six years, IGS is a liscenced and
registered grading company here in Arizona, i have all of the info of
    IGS"

He then asks what I think of the seller's response. I have to admit, I am surprised the guy responded...

    Such a crook.

By the way Con, I don't think this kid scooped it on ebay, he claims that he bought it at a local card shop. I don't obviously know if that is the case or not. If that is true, he just got duped. He hasn't said how much he paid for it. If he won it off ebay with the sentiments you propose, then I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, can you really blame the kid for bidding on a card he thought he was getting a good deal on? I think I could go either way, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and saying he just got duped. Either way, it's a sad statement to the affairs of this hobby (aka: business)

Edited to say the auction I linked was just for demonstrative purposes and to show the description stating UD won't let him sell 1/1 anymore. But it is the same style card with the sandwiched patch piece. This kids is stamped 1/1 though.

I couldn't agree more and add that things like this put another nail in the coffin of g/u, jersey, bat, ball junk

Looking for 81-84 Topps Stickers in PSA 9 or better, 81 Topps Scratch offs, 83 Topps Fold outs in PSA 8 or better, 83 Fleer Stamps and 81/86 Fleer Star Stickers in PSA 9 or better.

No, you read that correctly. I posted a follow-up after that where I basically said thanks for wasting all of our time while we tried to help you out and educate you. I haven't seen that thread since Friday afternoon. I'll be checking it out in a little bit. It's very interesting how "polluted" the BGS and SCF forums get with attention seekers and "summer break" kids, but that hasn't seemed to happen here at all.
