Cost to Reholder & More Ramblings

Looking through the services offered by PCGS I noticed it cost $5 to reholder.......unless you have an MS/PR70 graded coin, then it's $20.
Does PCGS use special ink or paper to justify the additional price, or is it that if you acn afford a 70, you can afford the additional cost?

Just a little venting as there seems to be 2 tiered (or more) pricing for every service performed by PCGS & I'm trying to understand why, i.e. $300 limit on economy-are they handled differently than normal service? I understand paying more for a (much) faster turnaround, but Moderns are less expensive to grade & have a faster turnaround time than economy.

Can someone give me a valid reason this is?

I bet MS/PR 70 coins receive special handling to ensure that they're not damaged in the reholdering process. A fingerprint could cost them thousands on one of these. (However, I think they should handle all coins the same way, regardless of grade/value, to ensure that the coins are not damaged at PCGS.)

I think the thing with higher valued coins, is that, the more the coin is worth, they quicker they want to get it back to you, in case something does happen, they don't want to be sitting on a bunch of really valuable coins that they would have to pay out a bunch of money for in case of fire, theft, natural disaster, that sort of thing... y'know? It's a liability thing, that they want the really valuable coins to get through as fast as possible.

    JrGMan2004,
But to get a coin reholdered takes the same amount of time, whether it's a 69 or 70!
    Steve27,
I would like to think that all coins are handled the same......maybe not?

Sry, I was not speaking on your thought about the reholdering, but about the below quoted comment:

George, OK...that would explain Express & Regular service, but why would Modern be 10 days faster & $2 cheaper. Certainly not all modern coins (probably few) are worth as much as those being sent in through Economy service.

  • Well, (and this is just a guess) that's probally because they have certain graders, that specialize in Moderns. Would you want someone with a lot more experience in 18th and 19th Century coins grading your High End State Quarters? And it may be that by spliting the Moderns and the Classics and having those other graders that do the Modern Submissions, they are able to move faster. Again, just a guess.

Why don't you ask HRH in the Q&A?
