Paypal question for sellers- securing purchases with credit card

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I need a refresher:

Why do many seller's auctions state that 'we accept paypal through bank account only' or something similar to this? While I can guess the obvious (such as a stolen or unauthorized credit card), are there other things to consider? There must be some horror stories about CC transactions that would warrant such a disclaimer.

I'm interested in hearing the good, the bad, and all opinions concerning this. Currently, I accept Paypal either way and I'm not sure whether to leave it alone or follow some of the herd, especially with higher priced items.........

Thanks in advance, Bill

  • It used to be that Paypal charged a fee for credit card transactions only, then they started charging the fee for every transaction so that point became moot.

I'm guessing that if the buyer uses a credit card, they can always contact their credit card company for a cancellation on payment.
  • BOTR,

Some sellers uses a Personal account and this account can't accept credit card. This has a receiving limit of $1,000/month. paypal does not charge fee when receiving payment on personal acct. Most sellers (big volume sellers/powesellers) have Premier/Business account which can accept any credit card. They have the option of accepting or not a cr. card and most of them do accept. Paypal charge a fee when receiving payment for this type of account. No payment receiving limit.

Put del confirmation on items below $250 and sig. confirm on $250 and above and follow paypal's sellers protection policy. Insuring the item won't help you. You need online tracking (this is your proof to paypal that you mailed the package). There's risk if you accept international payments. You're not covered by their seller's protection if you ship outside US.

    I hope this info helps.

I have a premier/business account. I just open a personal account and started using it. I still use DC with personal account when mailing packages.

I sold some lowlife a card that I sent with delivery confirmation to his Paypal Verified address. When the person claimed his credit card was 'lost', paypal left me to foot the bill. Paypal really doesn't care much about a delivery confirmation. If someone pays with a credit card and issues a chargeback, you're in a world of hurt because paypal will just take whatever funds you have in your account and screw you over.

What DaBigHurt said is true, the issue used to be the fees associated with accepting credit cards, or the account type limitation that couldn't accept them. Now, the worry is chargebacks. They are hard to fight and can be done for, I think, 90 days after the auction. Though with some credit card companies it can be a year. Who hangs on to DC receipts for a year anyway?
