More 1956 questions

Hi guys,
looking for some answers here as I am plugging along on my attempt at the 56 topps baseball set.
I noticed that on the set composition that commons that number 182-259 get a weight of 2, where all other commons before and after get a 1. Was this a second series that was shorter in print? As far as white backs go.. 101-180 command a premium, pre 101 do not and 180 and above have NO white backs?
Next Question, What are the team cards options as far as date/name centered/ ect..also does card # 100 (Orioles Team) have a gray back?
I am aware of the Ted Williams line variations, What about a Bessent/Ford variation?...

Thank You for any input

    Perk,

I have collected this set since childhood, and the last 4 years have graded and studied the set in detail. I just sold my set (weighted 8.02) in Mastro auction.

The third series (181-260) commons were a short print series and thus were awarded a 1-point premium. It does not show that way in the pop report. As a matter of fact, many of the lowest pop and highest cost commons are situated in the fourth and final series (261-340), including #263, 268, 271, 276, 306, 308, 318, 326, 333, 334, and 339. I have already tried to plead with Joe O and the set registry people that the weighting system is outdated, but to no avail.

Your statement about whitebacks is correct as you ask it.

As far as team cards, the six first series team cards (#11 Cubs, #72 Phils, # 85 Indians, #90 Reds, #95 Indians, and #100 Orioles) have three variations: team name left, centered, and dated version). The left and centered versions are available in white or grayback, the dated are only available in whiteback. The remaining 10 team cards in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th series are in centered version only.

The Ted Williams variations (green line, yellow line) have no difference in value and are not noted in pop report or on slab as such. I am not aware of the Bessent, Ford variation.

Good luck with the set, JIM S

Jim, thanks a lot for all that information, it will help me along the way in my quest to complete this awesome set. The gray back's appeal to me more than the white thus the white/gray back questions.

  • Hey Vic,

What's up with your 56 set...it seems to be moving awful slow. Didn't I remember you saying at AC last year that you hoped to have it complete by the end of the year?

Man, I might have to start a 56 set just to spur you on. Now tell your family to stop eating so you can put that money to use buying more cards.

    Looking for:
    1953 Topps in PSA 8
    1941 Playball in PSA 8.
1952-1955 Red Man cards in 7 and 8
    1950 Bowman in PSA 8

  • Vic I finally found the "Shift" key and I am trying to use two fingers instead of one. Yes, my son and I will be set up at Nationals again this year. We don't have a lot to sell, so we will probably be trying to sell old clothes and other Goodwill purchases. I hope the Seminoles AND the Gators get to meet in Omaha. Ron

Twinron, great to have your input, I hope to try to limit myself to just completing a basic set to start with. Over the next century when I finally complete it, It is good to know that this set once complete still will have more challenges.

    Perkdog,

The only advice that I can give you is to have patience, especially with the low pop commons. I have seen the Pirates team card go from almost $1800 four months ago to $ 675 last week. That example has been par for the course for almost all of the lower population cards within the last year or so that I have been working on my set. Is your set listed as Perkdog on the registry ? I will watch for you and good luck with your set.

    Twinron,

I will certainly look you up.Please start a thread about dealer locations when it gets closer.I am sure that many on the boards would appreciate the locations of board members.I know that I did last year when someone started that thread.

    PS,

An olive branch from a Seminole to a Gator about Omaha. imageimage A seldom seen gesture that truly shows your a gentleman. We can only hope.

Tipem....Unfortunately for me I have no other choice but to be patient with this set due to the $$$$ situation. My set is listed as "Perkdogs 56 Topps" and as you can see its in the begining stages. I have planned my attack by getting most HOF's first as well as Brooklyn players, followed by Yankee, Giant and Braves players and then go after the team/checklist cards along with plugging away at commons that I across. The Pirates team card was never mentioned to me before as being tuff nor has any commons for that matter. I guess after awhile I will find some cards harder than others. What is your set listed as? I would like to check it out.

    Perk,

My set is listed as "Vic's Project". I have been as high as # 20(last on the 1st page),and I think that I am currently high 20's right now. I am slow but steady.
