Kiss My Bench Master Set Goodbye!

I have just deleted my Bench Master Set. This is not a rash decision on my part because over the past few weeks I have deleted other large master sets (such as Rose) that I have no realistic interest in completing.

As much as I admire JB, there is no way in the world that I am going to hunt down all of the things to complete that set. I'm perfectly happy with my basic Bench set and I will devote any more Bench card activity to improving that set. My heart is with my vintage sets which I have been steadily upgrading those already complete (1956, 1957, 1972), and am gradually completing my others (1959 and 1973). I might even look to upgrade my 1975 complete set someday. I think this is enough to chew on for a while.

I'll entertain offers from anyone interested in my Bench discs, Pepsi, and Sportsdeck cards. Nothing else is for sale, however.

Good luck to Lee and the gang on this monster set!

Steve

I have been a vintage set colletor for awhile, but I think these player master sets are sort of fun because they include some cards that are just so rare and hard to find that it really adds something personal to your collection when you track one down, send it off to PSA, and add it to your set. Granted, collecting a set of a player's cards who played into the 90s or beyond is insane (I feel for you Nolan Ryan collectors), but some of the older HOFers are really fun to try and track down those rare cards. I've submitted many cards for my sets that are the first or only cards graded. I think this approach to collecting is ultimately more fun than completing a checklist of a mainstream issue #ed 1-500, 600, 700, or higher. Not that I'd ever knock anyone for doing these sets, I've done several myself and I'm still actively working on the 1960 Topps set, but I have a lot more fun with the oddball issues, especially when I find them and submit them to PSA myself.

    Steve,

In any case, best of luck with your sets. You are accumulating a very nice collection! What about the Stargell set? I assume that one is done as well?

  • JEB, I deleted the Stargell master set several weeks ago, and while I have 95% of the cards for a very high grade basic set, I really don't see the point of creating another set for the sake of having another set. I believe I have a good blend of sets already, player vs. annual sets, vintage and Kellogg's. Now only if PSA would create a game-used bat registry, I would really be in business!

Lee, it is extremely hard for me to get interested in most of the cards that the Bench master includes, and deleting the set is just my way of being honest about my collecting intentions. I would much rather go after a high grade vintage card for my sets than chase down another Zipz Disc. Having said that, the Bench master has some truly serious and tough cards, and I applaud your emphasis on the extremely hard to get stuff. In general however cards are just one facet of my overall baseball collection. If you can send me your email, I think you might get a kick out of a couple of Bench game used items I can send you a scan of. And no, the talk about reducing the size of the set didn't have any weight in my decision. In fact, making the set smaller would have had the opposite effect of making it easier in the long run.

Deleting the Bench master was an easy decision, and getting rid of the oddball things will just leave me more space for my other collections!

  • Thanks Lee! I do intend to keep my #1 ranking on the Bench basic set, with cost no object and to that end I am willing to be generous for a nice 1971 PSA 9 if anyone wants to sell me one, or any of the late 1970's or early 1980 10's I lack.

I'll send you an email with some Bench photos soon.
