Mingrade ?????

Two of the cards I previously submitted did not cross over to my requested minimum grade. They were returned not cracked out of their SGC holders, however, PSA flips were pasted onto cardsavers with the card information and a certification #. Does this mean that if I cracked out the cards and resubmitted them in the designated cardsavers, they would send them back in a grade which they already determined? I think these are both strong cards with a shot at PSA 8. Would it not be better to just crack them out and submit them raw as a first time submission? Any thoughts would be appreciated. That includes you too JAY!!

  • As another long time "Wolt-ite" (though he never took me anywhere he just took my money and all that I got back was some cardboard, let me take a shot at this one.
The boards unanimous vote will be crack them out your self and resubmit without an "history". I suspect that you will get one 8 and maybe two. It is hard to look good at a card in the holder and I think they error on the side of caution. Submit them with your next "first time" bunch and I think you will like the results.

I would say that your first step should be a personal assessment over what the card should cross to. If you think it may go higher than the assigned grade - crack it out. If you think the current grade is generous - then try the crossover special, as you may get burned otherwise.

I think personal competence/experience is the most useful skill in this area. For example - I had two large groups of Philadelphia Phillies SGC-graded cards. I personally reviewed them - and made my decisions from there. For example, on the 1980 Topps Phillies cards, I cracked out and submitted approximately 28 cards - all SGC 92 or 96. All of the 96s graded out as PSA 9, and one PSA 10. 13 of the 15 SGC 92's graded out as PSA 9, and two came back as 8s. The rest of the 1980 Topps cards, I sold in their SGC holders (in some cases - I already had a PSA 10 - so sold the SGC examples without reviewing).

On the other hand, the 1981 Topps Phillies SGC graded cards all seem to be rather generous on the grades. I will be submitting a bunch, as is, through the crossover service, and selling any duplicative or lower-grade examples I have.

Depending on what your are submitting, there are probably a few other rules to follow:

    A) If the card is a high-dollar card - you may get burned by cracking it out. A $10 re-submit on a crossover may be wortwhile if the card is worth a few hundred dollars.

    B) I generally would not ever crack out any GEM MINT card in a PSA/BGS/SGC/GAI holder. Too much uncertainty with those grades....

Finally - you should review the cards when you receive them back and see if you can determine why they did not get the PSA 8 grade the first time. If you only think they "have a shot" at PSA 8 - perhaps they are only 7s. Most of us tend to overgrade our own cards, rather than undergrade them. Critically review to see if you can determine why they did not cross. If you think it is a mistake - then crack it out.

    Good luck.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

JAKE - Both FUZZ & SCHMIDTY make sense. I bow to their wisdom!
And FUZZ, leave the desert and come on down (although its as hot here as where you are) We can talk about the '66 baseball set, you know the set you used to collect - and then you can tell me why you abandoned it in favor of footballimage ...jay
