Opinion on dealing with a buyer

I recently sold a Franklin to a guy in this auction, when I got to the post office I realized I forgot the two insurance slips I filled out and could'nt remember which packages needed it. Since they were low cost items I took a chance and mailed them without insurance. Well, what do you know, after being mailed since the 27th of last month, the buyer asks me where the coin is. I go back and look, find the paperwork and notice the Paypal reciept says $2.00 paid for insurance and $.70 subtracted as a discount(why am I not surprized, I better pay more attention.). I contact him and he says insurance is only $1.30 on $16.00. Before I tell you what else I've told him, I want to know what you would do.

Buyer paid what he wanted, not what the auction stated!

I was already suspicous, then when seeing he subtracted $.70 which I did not authorize, you can imagine what Im thinking now!

What's with charging $2 for insurance that costs $1.30? You're already making over $2 on your S&H. You shipped uninsured when they paid for postal insurance. Pay him and let it be a lesson to you.

The buyer was right, it is $1.30 insurance. So, not only did you ship it without the insurance he paid for, you tried to squeeze out an extra profit by overcharging for it.

My gut tells me he received the package, realized there was no insurance, and is now PO'd and wants to teach you a lesson.

How I would handle.......I think in this case honesty is the best policy. Tell him exactly what happened, and be very apologetic. Tell him if the coin arrives you will gladly refund all his shipping ($5), if it doesn't you will be more than happy to give him a full refund.

I think you stand to acheive better results going the apologitic/kindness route. Anyway, no use getting all worked up over $20.

Chalk it up to experience and be glad the coin wasn't worth more. Regardless of whether or not the buyers claims are legit, you really have no choice but to refund his money a take your neg.

Big Al, I would bet anything he received the coin also!

I dont spend time figuring out exactly what insurance would be on each item, so I use $2.00 to start! On some of my higher dollar items I,ve taken a big hit, I figure it just averages out. If people dont like the costs or can't seem to figure it in the price, THEN DONT BID!

I would tell him it takes 30 days to file a claim with the post office. If he is claiming it did not arrive, tell him to wait. It is not your rules, it is the USPS rules. If he does not like it (most likely because he has the item already) tell him too bad.

Even if you mailed it without insurance, it is no reason to allow them to not follow the established guidelines.

Bad argument for you...you stated "I go back and look, find the paperwork and notice the Paypal reciept says $2.00 paid for insurance" at the start of the thread.

So, shipping is different than insurance. Also, you made it optional and he still paid it, just at the rate that the PO actually charges!
Doesn't sound like he tried to rip you off at the start, and if he is doing it now on a $16.99 coin, then I am amazed...but, given that you have said you had already forgotten 2 insurance slips, couldn't remember which was which, are you 100% certain you have the right addresses, etc?
He may well be on the up and up.

Bottomline though, if it were me, esp for $16.99 (plus actual shipping), I would refund him and just ask him to let me know if it does show up (and, fess up to him what happened....truth is helpful image )

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Yes, I know. For a Franklin half of this value, I would charge $2.50, plus an optional $1.30 for insurance if the buyer requested it. I use CD mailers for single slabs, so my actual cost would be 83¢ for postage at just under three ounces, 13¢ for first class delivery confirmation, and 30¢ for the mailer. That totals up to $1.26. At $2.50 for shipping, that leaves $1.24 for those other costs, and insurance is a wash if the buyer wants it. This I consider reasonable. Charging $5 for shipping and insurance on a $16 item is getting on the outrageous side.

It was fully paid for. Come on, it takes me about 20 seconds to fill out an insurance form. At your rate of 70¢ a form, that works out to $126 an hour.

Russ, I think it is about time for your usual statement when dealing with WSM.

Solution....WSM charges 2 bucks for Insurance. Just up this to $2.20 and Insure your lower value items for 50 bucks and a penny. Then the cheap so and so will have to sign for the coin. If he discounts your Insurance send it uninsured and Email him a reason why you did so.

I fill out the forms and insure for $51+ ahead of time, regardless of the value(its less hassle and better coverage in the event according to the post office) , shows for who and how much, its more expensive but I dont care!

First off, charging $2 for $1.30 is NOT an "honest" mistake. You remind me of those "payday loans" places....sheeesh.
Secondly, you are ASSuming that this guy is trying to make you pay for it. He may be, he may not......do you have PROOF that he is? He sure would have PROOF that you didn't pay for insurance now, wouldn't he? And, the "self-insure" doesn't cut it here because you already admitted you weren't doing that.
Interesting that you are also one of "those" sellers who "loses money on the highend items (insurance on them) and charges more for the cheaper ones so it balances out image ...mighty anti-RobinHoodish isn't it? Take from the poor (lower priced items, people probably not able to collect the higher priced good) and give discounts to the rich.

Interesting, too, that you are calling the seller a

    << <i>CHEAP A$$ES >>

since you were the one overcharging on S/H (and, to be honest, I could care less about that $3, but then don't complain about what is happening now) and WAY overcharging on the INS (54% profit on the insurance Mr WallStreetMan)....why not just charge $4 s/h and $1 insurance if required? Same thing to you then and you would actually make more, right, since insurance is optional but your s/h isn't? image

Also, if you can't prove he received it, and it was your mistake, and you go and send him $2 back and that's it, then you deserve a neg and to be reported.
If he is ripping you, that isn't cool, but, neither is what you are thinking of doing nor your handling of the insurance item. S/H is one thing...but, you don't self-insure...and most of the time, the people that DO self-insure, do it at a lower rate than the post office....not HIGHER rate.

Refund him all of his money. He paid you (yes he discounted it to what the actual
USPS charge is, which I can't really blame him) and you accepted the payment with
the discount. You shouldn't have mailed the coin if the 70 cents mattered to you.

Anyway you look at it, he asked for insurance, you took the payment (by mistake maybe,
but you still took it) and now you can't prove that he never received the coin.

You mucked it up , now live with it and pay the guy. Whether he is telling the truth or is a 2 bit thief on a $17.00 item, he paid for insurance and you failed to provide it. You've been around long enough to know better. Pay better attention in the future!

This happened to me from both directions recently. I paid for insurance on 2 seperate items. In one case a coin was sent to me in a cardboard flip with the coin hanging out the sides, not even stapled correctly. Remember that phantom superficial "scratch" that looked more like a pencil mark, Relayer? The coin that got BB'd? I could have and maybe should have put one on the

seller, but it's not worth it to me on a personal level. That one idiotic scenario caused an otherwise pristeen coin to be BB'd and $30 in grading fees... down the tubes! I should have negged him but he was the kind that leaves feedback only after the buyer leaves feedback(See Feedback extortion 101) My beautiful Gem ruined because an idiot decided to charge insurance and instead sent my coin in a small white envelope with 37 cents postage that was torn in the process. NEVER AGAIN.

Second scenario..an old dealer that has been around for a long time did the same thing-White envelope-37 cents stamp except this coin made it unscathed. I made him sweat for over a month. He returned my money and fessed up like a man. I returned his money after I made him worry enough not to do it again, not because I'm a good guy but because I just couldn't steal from the old guy. 2 wrongs do not make a right. Besides, the way he conducted himself made me feel genuine pity for him.

BUT the thing that chapped my ace the most was this guy from Montana. Everything leaves out of here insured. I don't care if it's but a $5 item, it gets insured for $50.01 so that the buyer must sign! This guy whose ID is "Tink____" waited almost 3 weeks before emailing me, asking where his package was, then proceeds to tell me he had been out of town for the couple weeks after he won the item. I don't know who was brighter- him or the USPS. Everybody knows how I LOVE the USPS, right!?

I knew what he was up to. I also told him that an item must be missing for 30 days before a claim could be filed. Well, I filed the claim and even with him threatening me with a neg because things weren't moving fast enough for him, I paid him out of my

own pocket and when the claim money came in I re-imbursed myself. Do you know, that with ALL THAT...bending over backwards for him, this monkey left me a neutral ! What he did was make a fool of himself. If he stole it and got his money

back, in the end he will pay. All I can say is, in each case I did the right thing. I could have stolen, I could have left negatives but I didn't. No one will ever steal from me again because of the way I insure packages. You will sign for them!

I agree with what everyone has said here-chalk it up to experience. You messed up and left yourself wide open and probably got ripped off. Oh well. It could have been a lot worse. It could have been for an expensive item. Now go on behind the wood shed and take your whuppin like a man! Maybe you'll pay closer attention in the future.image
  • Options
When the buyer paid you short of your agreed upon charge you had the choice of accepting it or rejecting it. Since you accepted his payment you have no room to gripe about the $1.30 for the insurance. The buyer had every right to believe that his item was insured and if you left your self hanging for the sake of convenience that is your decision and fault.

Refund his payment, less cost of insurance if you like or in full if you follow an honorable path - and then move on

Actually a rather cheap lesson in business and dealing with the public

    Just my humble opinion

I cannot believe how many people say "just pay him". If you insured it and they said it was lost, you would say you have to wait for the PO. Since the buyer should still assume that you went through the PO, I would still say wait 30 days. If nothing else, they will uncover themselves by being upset.

How do you package your items?

    K6AZ uses a cd mailer.Cheap shipping products.

I use a box, bubble wrap, and the box tape with fibergass in it.

    That is more expensive.

I don't think $5 is to much if you ship like I do.
