Those Darned FB cards

Mikeschmidt has an interesting post on 55 Bowman BB that is contemporary to this one. There is a note in there that that is the only 50"s mainstream set to not be complete in 8 or better. I know that in BB, the 66 Topps set also fits this bill but I looked no further. I did check into FB though and that is a very different story.
Picking mainstream basic sets only from 56 through 69, The following horror story can be told:
22 sets total:
6 sets complete in 8 or better.
16 sets have the best set not at this level.
Of the 6 "magic sets"
1956 David Hall - set has been broken
1959 RAM collection IV - set is current
1960 Topps Frank Evanov - set is current
1963 Fleer Paul Kaufman - set has been broken
1964 Philly Frank Evanov - set is current
1969 Topps Dominic Dicicco - set was recently posted and is current.
Two sets broken, two sets belong to Frank "God I hope he doesn't want to collect the same stuff I do" Evanov (I believe that Frank is Mantlefan on the boards here) and one is new. I did not see that it has been done on any set twice so these are the only six. Total. Period.
Some may view this as opportunity but I just see a lot of bruised foreheads from banging them against the wall. The 65T BB has Charley Smith. There are other sets with equally notorious cards. But it appears in FB there are a bunch of them. Some of these sets are over 8.30 and still have one or two low grade cards. These must be tough.
Good Luck,
Fuzz
PS. The 1966 T FB "card of doom" is the checklist #132. Not graded in 8 NQ yet.
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

    Hi Fuzz

Yes it's me. I like my new middle name! Rest assured I don't anticipate starting any new sets. Finding those FB cards in PSA 9 is a budget-killer. I never realized that so few sets have reached that level. I'm indebted to Stonegate [Kevin O.] for many of my 1960 FB cards which he sold me when he broke up his fantastic set.

    Frank,

Yes those 60's are something arent they. I really wish I wouldn't have broken up my little raw find that was passed on to kevin. To this day I haven't found anything close.

I myself love the 63's but I'm a centering freak so throw that out the windowimage

  • Frank,
After having seen what you have put together the middle name just seemed to fit. And they give me crap about being hard to compete against. When I saw you 64 Philly set go up, mine went on hold. It was either save a bunch of bucks and be willing to be second when the time comes, or pour my heart and soul (and a lot of Franklin's) into the set. And for some reason, I haven't ever gotten around to that 60 Topps set in any real way either.
    Murcerfan,
I went through and checked card by card to make sure EVERY card was an 8. Skinsfan's 68T set @ 8.44 didn't make it and neither did my 63 Fleer @ 8.38 or the 66T @ 8.27. There always seems to be a few cards that stand in the way which I guess was the whole point in the first place.
I don't know how to deal with the "non-registered" collections so I didn't. I do not fully appreciate the reason for collecting a set and then not listing it. At least not if you are going to win a highly coveted certificate. And let's face it, the cert is nice, by the bragging rights are tremendous!

Didn't check the pops for all the sets,
but you get the idea of how hard it is to complete a 1960's fb set in all 8 or higher when you consider :

A card in the 1962 Topps set has a pop of 2 graded 8 or higher nq.

The following sets have cards or a card with a pop of 1 graded 8 or higher nq :
    1962 Fleer, 1964 Topps, 1967 Topps

And how about 1963 Topps, 1965 Topps, and 1966 Philly.
They each contain a card or cards with a pop of ZERO graded 8 or higher nq !

    I'm switching to baseball image

Now the big question is what set can i try next i got you on the 62,s that sneaky rascal wolfbear on a few sets himself trying to shift the focus from himself (we see you wolfman) and as always the man himself MR.FUZZ. A poor working guy like myself has no shot ,now dav is even moving into the 60,s football playground.
I think my best bet might be to join old couldabeen himself on those crane disks and 88,s after all vinny,s rejoined the tunaimage oh and thats not forget frank locking up the 64,s and 69,s

SKINSFAN - once I see you or Fuzz,
showing any interest at all in a set I'm collecting, I get afraid ... very afraid.

No shame here .. it's just that on my fixed income, I can't compete with you guy's unlimited funds.
Only problem on this end is that I'm running out of sets to try to run away and hide from you vultures in.

    That's okay ...
you guys can try to explain to my poor wife and family why I'll not be getting any certifs to hang on the wall this year ...

  • I'm actually happy and grateful every time that Frank (Mantlefan) Evanov upgrades a card from 8 to 9 in his set. I tend to be the beneficiary of the 8 and am more than happy to build a nice set and be in 2nd or third place on the Registry.

  • yes murcer as always you are correct dsl,s pop are off they make a killing on the 1 of 1 opps i mean 1 of 2

The 1967 Philadelphia Football may be one of, if not THE toughest sets of the '60s to complete in high grade.

I've been working on a graded set for over 3 years and it's been the most frustrating project I've ever worked on. I jumped up to 25% very quickly and then it's taken about 2-1/2 years to move another 10%.

Looking at the Population Report, it's not too hard to figure out why.

These three don’t exist in PSA 7 (NQ) or higher:

    ATLANTA FALCONS INSIGNIA
    TOM MATTE
    MEL RENFRO

These 15 don’t exist in PSA 8 (NQ) or higher:

    RON SMITH
    ERNIE WHEELRIGHT
    BALTIMORE COLTS INSIGNIA
    ROGER LECLERC
    FRANK RYAN
    DAVE MANDERS
    DETROIT LIONS TEAM CARD
    GREEN BAY PACKERS TEAM CARD
    LEE ROY CAFFEY
    LOS ANGELES RAMS TEAM CARD
    GRADY ALDERMAN
    MILT SUNDE
    EARL LEGGETT
    OBERT LOGAN
    TOMMY DAVIS

Plus there are 18 cards that are PSA 8, one of one with none higher, and lots of PSA 8 pop. 2 cards also.

In short, it's a brutal set to collect!

I'm sure Art and several others can attest to this!

    skins,
drop me a line.....an arrangement can probably be made.
...but I have to see what having the other guys lay low on Schrader will cost me first.

To me, one of the most impossible sets is the 1953 Bowman FB. Raw high quality singles are impossible to find - I'm still debating whether to dive into that set or net. I'm only 30, but have been collecting high grade vintage FB for nearly 10 years. It's funny how vintage FB is starting to catch fire - since many people are starting to realize the low print runs compared to baseball.
Collecting vintage auto'd fb cards and Dan Marino cards!!

IMHO if like a set enough that you think you want to build it someday, and you think the set is truly tough, start it now. Prices will only go up relative to other sets, and you'll need the time for all the cards you need to surface. I think you're right about '53 Bowman, too. Probably tougher than any Bowman set other than '52.

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Wolbear,
Good news. I am still on vacation in June. Doing lots of work around the house and expect to be really busy around here at least until the kids go back to school. Put a new pool in the back. Lots of yard repairs to be done and making little progress on my spring hobbies. I do not see getting back around to cards in any meaningful way this year. Therefore, from the Fuzz to you, I feel cofortable in saying that your third year running on 64 Topps appears to be safely in hand so that you can have a cert or two to show the family. In 2005 however, that may be a very different story.
