June Update on Prospects/Investing

Hello all! Fresh back from a 7 day fishing trip in Canada. I just looked up some prospects and how they were doing and it reminded me of a previous thread I started about 2-3 months ago. I was shocked at the prices that Alexis Rios ( $150 '02 Elite ungraded ), Adam Laroche ( $60 '02 Elite ungraded ) , Ian Stewart ( $80 '03 Prospect Premieres ungraded ), and Prince Fielder ( $125 '02 Prospect Premieres ungraded ) were fetching on Ebay at the time, and i said I would spend an imaginary $1,500 on their cards and see what kind of profit I would make if I resold them around this time.
Anyway, after looking up the most recent sales on Ebay, I was sickened by the prices now, although it did not surprise me. I didn't and haven't invested any $$$$ into these players because I thought they were WAY OVERPRICED all along. I pretended that I purchased like 4 cards of each for a total of $1,660. Below is what I would get back now based on recent Ebay sales ( on average ).
( 4 ) '02 Elite Laroche - Paid $240, sold all 4 today for $75.00 total.
( 4 ) '02 Elite Rios - Paid $600, sold all 4 today for $240.00 total.
( 4 ) '02 Prince Fielder Prospect Premieres - Paid $500.00, sold all 4 today for $220.00
( 4 '03 Ian Stewart Prospect Premieres - Paid $320.00, sold all 4 today for $260.00
Of course I didn't really sell them today, because I never really bought them in the first place. But these figures are very accurate after I checked the most recent sales on Ebay.
I would have received back around $795 on these cards after spending $1,660 on these very same cards just about 3 months ago. Pretty sad. Just goes to show how people pay EXTREME amounts of money for guys that haven't even played a single game in the majors yet.
Laroche stunk it up this year for Atlanta, Rios is stinking it up for the Jays ( 1 RBI in 10 games so far, .220 average ), and Fielder and Stewart are still in the minors. Stewart will be down there for at least 2 more years. He definitely shows promise and power, but he is too far away to invest in now.
How about the highly touted Rickie Weeks? Here ya go:
.244 avg, 48 games played, 14 RBI's, 2 HR, 4 SB, 26 runs, and a whopping 37 strikeouts!!
Figure that over a full year - About 42 RBI's, 6 HR's, 12 SB, 78 Runs, and just over a hundred strikeouts!! That is not too impressive for a guy that most say can play right now in the majors!! I wouldn't pay more than $20 for his Bowman Chrome Auto right now. They used to sell for $80+ not long ago.
I guy I like, Carlos Quentin, is hitting .278, 50 games, 41 RBI's, 13 HR, 22 strikeouts, and 3 SB. He can be had for a lot less right now than any of the guys I mentioned above, and he has much better stats. He's in the Arizona farm system. Keep an eye out for him one day.
I just thought I would share this with you since I did say I would follow up in June. Prospecting is fun, I hope we all make loads of $$$ one day by guessing on the right guys. It's not that easy though. Just like any other sport, great players are out there waiting to be discovered. Don't just listen to what Beckett says. Look at their stats each week. Do your homework. Just my lonely opinion. I'm no expert either. I thought that some people may find this interesting.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

How was the fishing? Hope you had a great time! Thanx for your honesty - I personally believe a little speculating is fun and with the proper timing profitable. Following the prospects in fun and you may make a little money. I like buying older vending for that purpose. But as most have attested to in other threads, we all have stacks of certain RC's collecting dust. Anyone like Jay Buhner or Pete Inciviglia (sp?) - I will be glad to send them a stack of 10! Or more! Good hearing from you! Did you bump into Ranch up there?

cards prices are already pretty saturated. I have always believed that the best time to sell rookie
cards in baseball is around February and March, the prices only come down to earth a few months
later. Right now people want the vets...Griffey, Pujols, Clemens.....
