What do you think of non-baseball player autos in baseball packs?

I’m not sure if this has been discussed here yet, does anyone have a strong opinion on it? I’m talking about cards like the Gandolfini Donruss elite card or the John Goodman and Jason Alexander from the Yankee set. I picked up a Gandolfini for the cheap because I like the Sopranos, but I wonder how they’ll do in the long-run. I love Seinfeld, but the Jason Alexander goes for $800!

The same thing as baseball player autos in non-baseball packs.

I can't understand why the Alexander went so high. I almost bid on the first couple on ebay at $150, but got cold feetimage. The common Gandolfini is dropping, now selling for under $100, and I might just have to have that one. In the abstract, I think it's a dumb idea, but when you see something like the Legendary Cuts Amelia Earhart/Charles Lindbergh deal auto card, that's just a cool card. I would hope that eventually they go the way of baseball autos and we have dozens to choose from for under $20.

Im not sure if anyone saw the articles in the new beckett yet ,but topps was talking about their
new topps fan favorites that will be out soon and they were saying that these sports announcers
and other non-players are just as part of the game as any player. I can see their inclusion in these
    types of products.

Playoff is including stars who like baseball in their products, I don't think of them as part of the game
but as long as you are getting good money for them on ebay then sure throw them in! I have more
of a problem with companies loading up products with guys like Wilbur Wood then stars who
    "watch" baseball on the tv.

What made me even more sick was the fleer rep in the beckett talking about how fleer greats of the
games was the signature product for fleer and that bringing quality autographs to the collectors
was their #1 aim no matter what the cost! Fleer took most all autos out of their products last year
and gave the collectors a bunch of GU! They killed 2002 greats loading it up with GU and making the
autos impossible to pull! In 2003 they just didn't make the product and now they are back talking
about the good old days of 2000 and 2001. What a crock! Too bad beckett didn't have the balls
to ask them about how they cheapened their "signnature" product the last two years!

Upper Deck needed autographs of God in order to sell that awful Yankee Sig product...man you can
pick up a box for under 90 bucks now!

It's just the next marketing spin to keep all the sheeple who are growing weary of Paul Blair autos busting packs in search of something they need that appeals to their pop-culture-pickled brains.
  • I'm just waiting for the Britney Spears AUTO'd panties/bra card. I'm sure Donruss has it in the works for 2005 Prime Cuts.

Sure....like any publication is going to ask their Advertisers tough questions!!!
I can almost live with some of these out-side-the-game autos if I have a decent chance of pulling one.
At this point, lose the gu stuff and up the ante on the autos IMO.

Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

I still agree with myself when I say that non-player autos are kind of dumb, but this leads me to think that a comprehensive pop culture/movie/TV set would be awesome. Non-sports cards is a large niche in the hobby. Recent sets with autographs/costume cards like Alias, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars have been hits. Autograph collecting of the stars has always been popular. I have a problem with paying the money for a signed 8x10 picture of some actor from some guy off ebay because who knows about authenticity? I think an autograph from a reputable company would be worth a lot in that hobby. Licensing and logistics would be impossible, but imagine a 500 card set with everyone from Jennifer Connelly to Robert MacNamara to Isaac Brock in it, with autograph parallels. Throw Derek Jeter and Anna Kournikova in there, too, along with Juliana Margulies just for me.

Dang, this idea is so good, I copyright it here and now. Those Upper Deck crumb bums better not steal this idea.
