Question About 2004 Heritage Base Set

I am think about buying the 397 card base set on eBay for about $15-20. It looks like a nice set as I like the vintage look. Any investment potential here? I doubt it as it was probably overly mass produced.

HA....no....no modern set has any real INVESTMENT potential....the set retains value if master with all the SP's...which may have SOME investment potential but not really. I purchased the granddaddy of set heritage sets for 50 percent book a year after it was out....you want investment..save your 20's and buy vintage...if you want to enjoy beautiful cards of today's players with an older vintage design go ahead and purchasethe 20 dollar non-sp set....get more enjoyment out of that then going to the movies for 2 hours right?

i correct myself...no modern NON-SHORT PRINT set has any real investment potential...if you had a 1/500 signed auto jersey of Pujols or something....yeah..that does...but we are talking about a massively produced non-sp set here.

In the past I would of said no to this but it appears that putting together a nice base set of this
    is getting harder!

    JS
  • How hard is it when there are a possible 5,000,000 complete sets in existence?!?! LOL

Stupid question...are the Topps Heritage cards "regular" sized or are they supersized as were the original '55?

Also, if I pick up packs at retail stores, is it likely that they've been searched for packs that have the good inserts?

(I haven't bought a pack of cards in probably eight years, but I'm thinking about picking up some heritage or Cracker Jack packs soon...)

The heritage are standard sized cards and is a really great set. I recommend you go to target or walmart and see if you can get the retail 11 pack boxes for 29.99 - they are loaded with the short prints (sp's) if you want to complete a set yourself. PM me or JS and we will try to help you with the commons and sp's - if you want the check list of sp's, I will pm them to you. Good luck! I am currently completing the CJ set with sp's and am much more partial to the Heritage set - it has been a winner since the beginning IMO.

If anyone pm's me, I can receive but not send - I have an internet explorer problem to fix.

    1) Buy the product
    2) Open the product

    and then, and ONLY then

    can you

    3) comment on the product.

I think anyone who opened a great deal of heritage this year understands my post.

  • joestalin,

You should by some vintage product. They only thing, they don't call it product, they call it the real thing

Why take out your Cubs frustrations on us? Just admit the last "modern" product you bought was 40
cases of "can't miss" 92 donruss that are in your closet as we speak?

    ...they make good door stops!

AJW, if you buy loose packs, chances are you won't find game jersey cards, but that's no big deal since most are worth less than $5. The best inserts are the autographs which I believe are unsearchable (except for the autographed game jerseys, extremely rare), although I've never pulled one so I wouldn't know. There are also black-bordered chrome inserts that may be searchable. From the boxes I've opened I felt kind of "split" in the middle of the packs when there was a chrome inside, so packfeelers might have found them but you probably can't tell from the outside if it's a regular chrome, a refractor, or a black.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

Last week my wife bought me two 11pk retails because she's a good sport - so they are still out there.
ajw - that's your best bet, if you can still find any.

Also, Helio - I have the last three cards from heritage if you would like - just pm me with your address - no charge.

I don't know about "investment" quality of this set, but it the only modern set that have bought more than 2 packs of in the last 5 years. It is a nice set for what it's worth (set collectors) with some bonuses. IMO. Regards.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

Have you checked out other year heritage base sets? I really liked 2002 modeled after the 53 set. Last years
was nice too. If you study checklists you might be able to get some stars within the base set, I know
some years the big stars are short printed but you might be able to get your favorite player too. Im
not sure if you can find 01-03 base sets on the bay anymore.

  • I am a collector of vintage baseball cards and unopened packs. Even though I enjoy the vintage cards, I also enjoy collecting the Topps Heritage cards. I think they are great modern set that have a vintage feel to it. Although they may not have the investment value of some of the vintage cards, I believe that they have a good investment value relative to the modern cards being produced. Besides why does everything we collect have to be for an investment. These sets are fun. I am in the process of putting together master sets for 2001, 2002 and 2004. I am just a few cards away from completing each set. I already have the master set for 2003. I have a couple of 2003 Topps Heritage base sets and numerous 2004 SP and non SP cards available. If anybody wants to trade/purchase, please send me a PM.

I totally agree with you - the sets are fun, as such, to put together. And, for anyone doing business on ebay, you can flip alot of stuff while it is hot to pay for the complete set. Thanx

Kevin - I absolutely am with you on the 53T design - it is definitely my favorite so far - I am looking forward to the 57T design in a few years!

I mostly collect football and now, thanks to Lebron and Carmelo, I got interested in collecting basketball again. I will say that Heritage DEFINITELY got me interested in collecting baseball again. Cracker Jack...not so much. But Heritage was a lot of fun to put together, some good inserts and a vintage feel. Overall a real winner every year and it does have some investment potential. At least the boxes do, the 01 (52T) boxes are double their original SRP. WHen I was doing the local shows, I couldn't believe the number of people asking me for this stuff. THen I got ahold of a half-case and put it out. I got caught up in the hype and really had zero interest in it prior to that. Next thing I know I'm telling people the rest of my boxes aren't for sale and to go away. image (Not really go away, but they weren't for sale anymore)

Like WinPitcher said, these sets are fun, they have a fair amount of difficulty and some good bonuses once in a while. If you want 1 auto every 3 packs plus 10 worthless game used, then this is not the product for you. If you want something fun with a vintage look that poses a challenge and has a few surprises inside... then this is definitely the product to check out.

    of extras from 01-04.

I agree...if I buy some packs it will really be to collect the cards. In fact, the inserts that I've seen don't appeal to me at all. I'm thinking about buying and cracking open a box, but so much of the price is for the rare inserts, and I don't even want those.

Is there anyone out there that collects the inserts that would want to make a deal with me? We'll somehow split the cost of the box...I'd get all the "regular" cards and you'd get all the inserts?

    Just a thought...

Also, is there a complete masterset checklist online somewhere? I'd like to see exactly who and what is in the set. Is there a boxtopper? (I think other Heritage years had one)

There might be a checklist on the topps site, other than that you could get one on the beckett site. There
was a box topper on the 2004's and of course 2001 heritage had randomly inserted Mays autoproofs. Good
    Luck and welcome

There is one slight disappointment people would encounter in buying older heritage - especially with last years design - the centering is all over the place and you probably won't be able to return them for replacement. One thing I did do and was pleased - returned some old heritage and they informed me it was too late - 86 on the supply - they gave me packs of New heritage! I was fine with that.

Mike, did you get anything out of the packs they sent you? How many cards did you return -vs- how many packs did they send? I'm thinking about finding some unopened Heritage from the previous years.. I'm also considering some Heritage football.. I just realized last night that I dont have any Rickey Hendersons from Heritage Baseball.. so I'm really stoked to be getting the complete "Henderson Heritage Set" from JoeStalin! I like the 1952 designs on the 2001, so a Henderson 1952 Topps card will be cool..

First off, the person handling this gave me equal cards back - I sent about fifty and got the same amount back in the packs - I got a few chromes, sp's - nothing big. Here's the deal on Topps:

<< <i>"although we are unable to help you with your specific request, we are enclosing complimentary product for your enjoyment" - "If you disire card per card replacement of factroy defective mechandise, please limit your requests to 25 cards. We suggest that you list the cards by number in order and include the cards that you have listed." >>

I am about to send in a bunch and will "list" the cards that are of value to try to get one for one replacement. On the commons, I am going to return them in bulk with a total number to try and get "pack" replacement. I will tell you how it goes. From year to year, anything is possible as policies can change. Also they have a toll free number 800-489-9149 but I have, at times, had trouble getting through and could only leave a message. Overall, I think they are pretty good. I have dealt with a person named Lisa who is very friendly and has even let me return something from the "vault" when they explicitly have a No Return policy.
    I will keep you posted.
