Went to the local Target today..What has happened to this hobby????

My wife was out of town and I was bored on a Saturday afternoon, so I went to Target to find a box to open. I looked through all the boxes..Bowman Heritage, Ultra Football, Prestige Football, Topps Baseball, Bazooka Basketball, the list goes on...

I look at the odds of autographs or game jerseys on these boxes..1:300, 1:200, 1:48, 1:1700... what gives??? Then I come home to look at what some of these inserts are selling for on ebay and it's like 3.25, 5.00, 12.00, 8.45...

How disappointing can it get? I ended up leaving the store with a pack of Topps Heritage and Topps M3 Basketball, which is about the ugliest set of cards ever made. Paid 6 bucks for a bunch of crap.

Am I missing something or is this hobby in trouble?

Topps heritage has been very good to me this year!! buy a retail box for 29.99$ and turn it into 40-100$ 90% of the time. so many sp's chrome cards in those boxes and sometimes an auto or black refractor and people love them on ebay. the whole master sets sells for 300-600$ as fot the m3 basketball i agree they are ugly!

Here we go. Any guesses on how many posts for this thread?

No hit on Heritage - I happen to like it too.

I think it is common knowledge how much some of us appreciate Heritage. But I think Joel is asking a good question. The potential answers are equal to the respondents. I think that the scarcity of the gu stuff is not translating into demand/bucks with the exception of highly specialized items like the 1/1 Lebrons or Babe stuff e.g. IMO, the hobby isn't doing too bad this year compared to others - I just think the gu items have reached diminished returns - it's tired - and who knows what will replace it?
There's way too much stuff out there to follow let alone purchase. As is always the case in business, the consumer with their purchases will determine where this goes.

If you are a true vintage collector and still enjoy the players of TODAY then you will bow down at the feet of topps crying in joy that Hertiage exists...WHY?? cause it gives you the opportunity to open packs of cards that share the design of your most beloved sets that you collect from a time when, like me for exampls, you were not even born or a sperm in the humble sack of your father (you still may have been an egg however). Saying that heritage is crap is an opinion, and like bungholes everybody has them and to voice them holds true to the american way....However, if you really want to get your money's worth out of heritage then BUY A 11 PACK RETAIL BOX!! There are a guaranteed 11-12 SP's per box and every other box usually has a neat GU seat or GU jersey.....30 bucks is not bad...you get at least 60 dollar value out of every box. As far as the design goes they are the most beautiful cards to come along since the 1950's designs..which in my opinion are the best ever created- simple yet effective. I prefer 2004 heritage over 2003 simply due to the fact that they TRIED to make the pictures look painted...unlike last year when they completely dropped ontheball on that and ended up making a set that freaking looked modern instead of vintage. But...im getting off track and thus di-gress.

I read his comment totally different. I'm pretty sure he was talking about the other set, which I'm not familiar with.

As far as GU, that's been dead. Most of it only sells well in large lots, and only then if it's mixed with some high dollar cards that stimilate interest.

Joel brings up an important point, this point is perhaps more evident to someone who hasn't
followed the retail market. Retail has gotten pretty sad, auto odds are really long these days
and we all know that 85% of the autos are garbage. I think we have one thing working for us
retail hounds though....the companies have to buy back the wax they don't sell. Sooner or
later they learn, I think two sets are trying to turn this around. I have talked about team heroes
and their nice 1:24 auto odds..it seems like UD is doing the same with a product that just came
out. Hopefully other products will follow suit....funny about heritage...topps knows that it can
sell a bunch every year just on the base cards alone but they have done a resonable job getting
good autographs in the product every year...lets hope that stays the same too!

On a related note, I was at a show and found the the pack searcher that I had been yelling about
on here. He had a stack of 20 team heroes autos. These pull one per 24 packs so I started asking the
guy questions about the product.....that anyone who opened 24 boxes would of known and sure
enough he didn't know squat! What a jerk!

Also was he looking at "full" boxes? Are not the odds a little more "skewed" on those 1/2 box things?
