My 1959 set breaks down as follows: 1st series (1 - 110): white back 2nd series (111 - 198): grey back 3rd series (199 - 286): both 4th series (287 - 374): grey back 5th series (375 - 440): white back 6th series (441 - 506): grey back 7th series (507 - 572): white back
My 1960 set follows the same pattern, except for the following: 1st series - white; 2nd series - grey; 3rd series - white; 4th series - grey; 5th series - both; 6th series - grey; 7th series - grey
I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has different colors than what I have listed. The series in each set that contains both colored backs have been long documented and I don't believe there is a premium for either.

In 1959, my experience and that of a few other collectors who search for grey backs in the third series, is that the greys are more difficult to find in high grade. That being said, no one has ever recognized them as anything special. I know of one collector who is completing his set with both whites and greys and he is having a devil of a time finding the last few grey backs in acceptable condition.
In 1960, I have always found the fifth series interesting. The grey back cards seem to have much better color and gloss. I just think they are much more attractive. The white backs seem to have a dull look about them. Also, the grey backs seem to be a little softer cardboard and are harder to get an 8 in.
These are my experiences. Look forward to other comments about this subject.

Eggs Ackley - both mixed series in my '59 and '60 sets are predominantly white backed. I only have 1 dup in the '60 5th series that I could compare, and the colors do seem a bit darker, but I'd have to look at a bunch more...and I will!

Now that I look at it, that is how my set breaks down as well. I just have so few early cards that it was hard to pick up on.
