Hmm. A country I'd not heard of in Krause.

Not even one of those breakaway Soviet republics or Balkan states, either.

Mutawakkilite.

In fact, not a new country at all. I guess it's just a new Krause listing (maybe their coins were listed under Yemen, before? Or did I just never notice?)

They're not one of those one-page wonders, either. They've got five pages in the '04 edition.

Guess you learn somethin' new every day. Heck, that's one of the nice things about this hobby.

Yeah. Part of Yemen, as best I can tell.

I think it sounds like real Black Africa, not Islamic.

    Mutawakkilite.

    It's got rhythm.

Does have a certain African-sounding rhythm to it, doesn't it?

Any coins to show? Nope. Just stumbled across that section in Krause, when I was looking up something from Mozambique, and overshot.

Here's another: Sharjah. Also on the Arabian peninsula.

    Sharjah issued that Kennedy piece.
I've handled about 4 and they don't last long.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

Sharjah is one of the United Arab Emirates, and the Mutawakkilite kingdom is now part of Yemen. I liked it better when Krause grouped these entities with the countries they are now part of -- makes it easier to find stuff. image

So I am just discovering. Lots of differences between the '02 and the '04 editions. Looked for the Straits Settlements under Malaysia, and Ceylon under Sri Lanka, just as I was used to doing, but now they are in their own sections in alphabetical order.

My dad worked in Sharjah for three years after I left home for college. As already stated, it is one of the Emirates. It was not an oil-rich one when my family lived there, but it was directly adjacent to Dubai, which was.

In the summer you would have to take your bath early in the morning because the "cold water" pipes would heat up in the midday sun and create a scalding bath during the day.

I've never smelled a fish market like the one they had there. Wow!!

The Emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al Qaiwain, Ras al Khaimah, Fujairah and Ajman. Abu Dhabi is the dominant one and the shiekh of that emirate typically runs the country. Dubai has a lot of influence too. The others just go along for the ride, mostly.

BTW "Sharjah" is my dad's ebay handle. He gave up on it some time ago, but used to buy a lot of stamps.
