Fair Winds and Following Seas, Ronnie!

President Reagan was one of those guys who grew on me as I got older. I worked and voted for John Anderson in 1980, and voted for Mondale in 1984. That was then, this is now. A President only needs to get that One Big Thing right to secure a large place in history, and for Reagan, it was bringing an end to the Cold War. I became a father soon thereafter and I've always felt it was great that my daughter didn't have to grow up with a potential Cuban Missle Crisis lurking about.

Yes, I'm a democrat, but with a little "D". Reagan stood for an awful lot that I didn't like or agree with, but dadgummit, he got the One Big Thing right (plus a few others as well) and for that, we and the world owe him our thanks. God bless him

Steve

President Reagan was a great American. He stuck to his beliefs, held strong, and defeated communism. If weren't for him, we'd be living in a much different world today. We as a country owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

I was 10 when Reagan was in elected into office.

He was the first polotician (sp?) that I really followed in school. Like it or not, he helped shape the beliefs of a generation of 80's kids like myself.

Sounds corny, but when a prominent figure of my teen years dies, I feel a little bit of those years die too.

    Rest in Peace Mr. President

  • Well Said, Machodoc.

I voted for Carter in 76, Anderson in 80, and then Reagan in 84. It took me a few years to wise up.

Even though the press still hates him he is one of the most admired people in America today, and I expect that the country will put on quite a show to send the gipper on his way.

I was in the military in 1980-81 when Pres Reagan gave us a huge pay raise. He truly cared for the welfare of military personnel and their families. Whether you agreed with his policies or not, he was a man of vision and determination. Thank you Mr Reagan for helping to bring about a quick end to the Cold War.

Very very true. I just relived the sad days before his presidency when I rented the movie "Miracle" about the US hockey team in 1980. In the movie was President Carter's sad speech, pictures of the gas lines, the cold war and other images from 1980. President Reagan really turned things around and made us proud of our country again.

    Rest in peace.

One of the greatest Presidents in my eyes . As some of the news commentary this evening has stated , even those who were polar opposites politically (Tip O'Neill, etc.) received no mean spirited gibes from him, his sense of humor won out.

I worked for the local Reagan/Bush reelection committee as a lowly doorbell ringer. I was a senior in high school and it was my first experience in a political campaign. He was a great man and a great President. Our country and the world was lucky to have him.

Ronald Reagan was Grover Cleveland Alexander when I was a kid; he was Ronald Ray-guns, shooting up the University of California system when I was an older kid; he redeemed himself as a most benevolent President; he died of the same killer disease that took my father - he is indeed in a better place, and, as a grizzled left winger with rounded corners, I must admit he left us with a better place. God bless him.

The press still hates him? You can't possibly be serious about that. No matter what your views of Reagan are, we all have to admit that the guy's gotten some of the best media treatment in recent memory.

President Reagan was an icon of my teenage years. I tracked his 1980 campaign in my 7th grade Social Studies class and made a scrapbook. He made me want to pay attention to politics in this country. He was a great leader, role model, and ambassador for the American Way. I miss him. No other president in my lifetime has come close to the impact he had on my life and beliefs.

Very true, and I'd take it a step further by removing "Republican" from the sentence. The nature of politics has changed too much since '84 to allow truly exceptional individuals to rise and lead the country to greatness. Both parties are now too indebted to primary voters and to those who fund their campaigns - the potential FDRs and Reagans of the country no longer choose politics as a profession. A lot of change (not necessarily good either) will have to take place before the next "great" President takes office.

    RIP Gipper.

    Steve;

I make no bones about the fact that I am thoroughly embarrassed to be a resident of the fine Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It's only redeeming factors are it rugged coastline and colonial architecture. The leadership in this state abominable.
