<< <i>Many informative and thought provoking posts. >>

Opinions vary on what hobbyists consider informative and thought provoking posts. I enjoy nostalgic stories of card collecting and pictures of interesting cards as much as the next guy. The negative stuff, however, while may not be pleasant to hear, actually teaches me more.

I can honestly say that there has been no post in the three or four years that I have been reading that was more informative and thought provoking than the argument between MW and BOTN on the night of the Mastro auction. I have been in this hobby for a long long time, but never could I have imagined that that card doctoring was so pervasive. I never knew that so many dealers went to such extremes to have their cards improved. Is that garbage when someone sheds light on the darker side of this hobby? The conduct may be garbage, but the information was not.

Also thought provoking in that same thread was intellectual discussions about the acceptability of certain alterations in this hobby when compared to other hobbies. I learned that there may be some alterations that are acceptable to the majority of hobbyists but there are some that are not. Is that grabage? I didn't think so.

The longest thread since then was the thread about potential shilling. Some forum members thought that the practice was ok while other did not. I thought there was persuasive arguments on both sides. Other collectors pointed out what to look for on ebay to identify potential shilling. I found that to be a little disturbing myself, but nevertheless informative and thought provoking.

These are hobby forums, for crying out loud. They are supposed to be lighthearted and fun. I find them to be educational as well. Some of the finest posts on these forums deal with subject matters that we may not be comfortable with. Not everyone wants these issues addressed but that does not make them garbage.

  • and yet these same people you refer to let garbage seep into their posts that have nothing to do with the collecting industry, and I would hope that you agree with me on this small point - let's keep the controversy on these boards to card collecting
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.
  • I honestly learned a lot from those threads as well Koby. It's just when people take things to a personal level that I get mad. There is nothing wrong with a good debate and even amongst all of the crapola coming out of botn's and mw's posts, there was some information that I definitely wasn't aware of. Bring on the debates - let's just not take attack people.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

    Wayne,

Thanks. That's what I meant by "garbage". Sorry if anyone took it the wrong way. I just thought that the posts today were all worth reading and I thought I'd comment on it.

I have no problem with intelligent discussions about the "darker side" of the hobby. I agree, they are informative, but lately it has gotten out of hand.

    Vic,

All is well, except for my thumb.

Best of luck with the All-Stars!

I look forward to hearing from you.

I've been working on finishing my workshop - notice anything familiar?

Looks like you got yourself a few building code violations happening here, the worst being no GFI on that outlet next to the pissery.

For what it's worth, I'm an Engineer, the structure has a CO from my local building dept., and it's still a work in progress. Notice anything "board related" in the photo?

    JEB,

I see what looks like a standard DeWalt 3/8" electric drill. If you go cordless, try a Bosch 18V 1/2 drive. I have one of the older models and the balance, feel, and torque of this drill is top notch. You'll feel like installing 5 or 6 more urinals after using this baby........to the delight of your friends and neighbors when it's time to 'go'.

    BOTR,

You get up too early (so do I but not quite so much). I just had to take a moment to comment on what a great picture you have for your ID icon. I just have to smile each time I see that little face! What a delight she must be.

I have three kids, 14, 5, and 3, and they are my joy. I'll post a picture next time we have the "what do we look like" thread.

Now, go back to your coffee! image

I think there is a law here in FL against handling sharp objects while your pants are down. image

    BOTR,

Actually, it's a 1/2" Dewalt Hammer Drill. I just bought it last week when the brushes went on one of my older drills. I do like the Bosch drills as well. I have a Bosch Rotary Hammer that has been great. In fact, I'll be chipping out a concrete slab with it this afternoon.

    Jeb,

Looks like a labor of love(and hard work).

It's a good thing that there is no law against handling large objects while your pants are down. imageimageimage

    bobsbb,

Thanks for the kind words. Yep, she's a cutie and smart as a fox. She's almost 2.5 years old, and her younger brother is just 9 months. They're both great kids. (Yeah, I know, all parents say that about they're young ones)

Next icon upload day I will try to have either Ryan or both pictured.

    JEB,

Wow, I was way off base on the dewalt..........oh well, wouldn't be the first time.

Anyway, glad to have you around.

    Happy Urinaling!
