Anyone bidding in Leland's Auction?

Of course you are, aren't you? What?? You ran out of money during the OldJudgeMastroNetRobertEdwardsSportsCardsPlus auction that ended 5 minutes ago? Yeah, me too.

Note to all: If you are one of the few still bidding, do not mention what you are bidding on!!! When you do, everybody (lurkers and non-lurkers alike) will rush right out and bid three times as much as you ever could (as an absentee bid...not honest bid or top-all bid...absentee bid like you were too sick to bid).

Let's talk in code...if you are going to bid on a Jersey, for instance, say "clothing top". If you are going to bid on a wax pack lot, say "gum storage devices". That way nobody will be the wiser. image

We could also use pig-latin to confuse the guys from the SGC boards (alamazooKay atsBay ollectionCay). That was fun, my first slam at alternate message board posters!! image

Lurkers just upped the bids on all hockey lots. Good luck...hope you win your "icy pond" items. image

I was outbid on shiny paper with images on them. I am hoping to increase bid later. Will not be deterred from shiny paper.

    '93 Finest Refractor set?

this is one of the few modern sets that interests me. i bought a Jeff Conine (my fave player) PSA 9 for $75, and now i'm hooked. doing a PSA 9 set would be out of my league by several thousand miles, but a Marlins team set would be nice

I agree with goodriddance189...I'm guessing "shiny paper with images" must be the refractors. I have increased my bid to infinity.

Bidder warning: When (and if) you do click in that little bidding area (the one with the the list of possible absentee bids in it), make sure you click out before you go scrolling around with the wheel on your mouse. I clicked in the field, thought about making a bid at a few hundred or so, changed my mind and tried scrolling around to read the listing again. Well, darned if the bid amount didn't change while I scrolled (got up to $1,187,300 before I realized what I was doing). Note to self: Don't bid $1,187,300 for "paper with images" no matter how "shiny"!

    LOL Bob,

I am nowhere near infinity and I will definitely keep my bid at least a hair below a mil.

There just isn't much that ticles my fancy (like Halle and Anna!!) in this auction. The Refractors are cool, but the Ryan is not a good "specimen"... for the bucks, I'll keep holding out until a good copy falls into my price range!

MMMMMM, Halle. When is she going on Leland's. I would definitely back up the truck for her.

  • Has anyone here ever sold an item through Leland's? I have one board member's opinion of them and I would like to hear others. I have an item that I am considering auctioning through them (I have a call into them now) and I wanted to get some feedback before I decide.

    Thanks

    Keith,

I kind of felt the same way about the Ryan. Also, the description on a couple other "shiny cards" made me wonder about the overall condition of the set. Maybe reading too many Mastronet auction descriptions where all sets are "extraordinary" and all cards are worthy of PSA 13 grades makes it harder to read "NRMT" next to a card that is only 11 years old (Sosa for instance). If it closed now, the high bidder gets a great deal!! If it closes at $8K (+17.5%) or higher, I'm not so sure.

I don't want the "17.5%" in the previous paragraph to be ignored, so I will type it again right now 17.5%. Hows come dese guys get that extra 2.5% vig? Nice array of stuff for the non-card collectors, but worth an extra bump? We'll see.

If any of you have looked at the "shiny paper images" and scrolled down two more auctions to lot #1537, you will see that "oh so rare" Topps Desert STORM Baseball set!!! Wasn't that the 33 card set of images of tanks and George's dad in a flak jacket? I GOTTA GET IT!!!

    Bob out.
  • I considered a bid on the Ed "what's on a Pirate ship." Only one bid, but I get queasy passing the 10 threshold, but it's definitely on my lifetime wantlist.

OK, now that my "blonde" moment is over, I have figured out which card you are talking about (helped to read the prices).

    I had guessed:
    Pirates
    Gold
    Sails
Pinkney (Ed Pinkney...pink knees from all those pirates scrubbing the decks)
    Parrots
    More Pirates
    ankPlay

  • My mind came up with "booty" and "treasure" before I realized the answer.

Thanks for pointing that out, Bob. I was just assuming it was 15% like it has always been for Lelands and all the other bigger auctions. The extra 2 1/5% may change some bidding strategy. Lesson to self: read auction terms.
  • If the time increments added are 10 minutes for the bid then why is there 14 minutes left on the auction?

Bid on a lot that included a storied stopper of vulcanized rubber discs earlier tonight, but I just noticed that I've been outbid.

  • How about that 54 Bowman Box - any snipers there?
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.

    Chris,
I thought about it but decided not too. Let somebody else make all the money. As long as the population of GAI graded 1954 Bowman packs increases, I'll be happy! image

Is it safe? Can't tell from Leland's site whether people are still bidding. I picture them all in a big room. jacked up on caffiene, staring daggers at the phone, and it rings every 9 minutes and 59 seconds. That would be a fun experiment. Try to keep an auction going forever.

    Brent,
Did you win your shiny images for less than a mil? Hammer price seemed reasonable.

I did not win the Refractors. I needed to keep the total (including the 17.5%) below $7500. Unfortunately, I did not acheive this goal. I was a little surprised the Ryan auto jersey went for more than $1,000. Of course, I have very little experience in the auto or jersey arena. In any event, I'm back on the Thomas/Ryan hunt.
