Hmm. Just found a whole box of stuff I'd forgotten about. Giveaway time! (***WINNERS IN TOP POST**

I'll stick my hand in the box and randomly pull something out, blindly. Sound like fun?

AND THE WINNERS ARE:

DBSTrader2- (got coin #5- the Greek 5-lepta.)XpipedreamR- (got coin #4- the Jamaican farthing.)DominusDeus- (got coin #1- the Japanese 1-sen.)theboz11- (got coin #2- the Lebanese lion.)a2labmom- (got coin #3- the Ottoman Egyptian one.)

Into a box of what is probably nifty old coins, Mister Smartypants. But for you, I could put on a rubber glove and stick my hand in the kitty litter box, if you prefer.

Here's where I stuck my hand.

    image

It's a... uh... Japanese 1-sen. It's dated, uh... mmm... aw, hell. It's an OLD Japanese 1-sen. Roy, would you or somebody else care to do the honors?

<< <i>The sen is a Meiji 20 (1887), 27.87mm, 17.3g of copper, mintage 22,249,580, V scales on the dragon (if you could see them), not cleaned recently (and perhaps not at all). I'd give it an F (75¢ in the 19th Century 3rd Ed. or ¥150 - that's ~$1.40 - in the 2004 JNDA). image >>

Thanks, Roy. You're entered, though you didn't ask to be.

Let's pull out a couple more, just for giggles.

    Coin two is a...

    image

...Lebanese aluminum 10-piastre piece from 1952. Probably not worth the stamp it'll take to mail it to the lucky winner, but oh well. This is a truly random grab.

    Coin number three is a...

    image

...whatzit from the Ottoman Empire. Egypt? Turkey? I'll let somebody else do the attribution. Can you tell I am too lazy to pick up Krause at the moment?

Since I'm on a roll, here (and eating a roll, at the same time), I guess I'll pull a few more. We'll do a half-dozen.

(Don't worry- I'll wash the garlic roll off my hands before I draw again.) image

OK, here goes... I'll dip my hand in the box three more times, for a total of six coins. As of now it seems we have more giveaways than entries, so I'd say the odds look pretty good for y'all so far. image

    Coin number four is...

    image

... an 1882 Jamaican farthing. Looks to be a nice VF-EF coin under that toning, but it sure could use a bath. I wonder if it is treatable.

    Coin number five is...

    image

    ...an 1869-BB Greek 5-lepta piece.

    Coin number six is...

    image

... an 1888 Indian head cent from some weird country I've never heard of. image

Thus endeth the freebie selection. I literally put my hand in the box without looking and drew these out.

I'll select the winners after the summit is over.

I don't yet know how I will assign the coins to the winners. Guess I'll draw the six winners, and the first who posted can have first pick of a prize, the second can have second choice, and so on down the line.

  • first name you pull gets the first coin you posted, 2nd name gets 2nd coin and so on... makes sense to me...
  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,647 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think I'll just do it this way: first name I pick gets first choice, second gets to choose next, and so on. This way, everybody gets a little bit of choice, except the sixth person, who wins whatever's left. image

  • Enter me in please, LordM.
  • #3 puzzles me a lot... It is dated 1293AH, which corresponds to 1876AD, but this is the "frozen year" indicating the start of the reign of Abdul Hamid II. Regnal year is somewhat obscured due to pic size, but looks like R.Y. 10. The reverse tells me that the denomination is 5 something, most likely "Kurush"... problem is there is no Turkish 5 Kurush listed in Krause for year 10 image. In fact, no coins dated R.Y. 10 are to be found at all.

My quick conclusion is that the coin is not turkish. Will look up Krause tonite image
