What can you do?

I know the ST qualifier does not mean "smells of tobacco", but as I'm expanding my interest into early tobacco cards, I'm finding, not surprisingly, that the packages arrive reeking of smoke. I tried putting them close to an ionizer I have in my card room, but the smell seems to be heavily insinuated into the cards. Anybody have any tried and true methods of removing the odor?

Have you tried having them graded and encapsulated?

good point, however, I'm talking about groups of 200 or 300 non sports issues that would cost a ton o' dough to encapsulate.

BTW - Saturday's dead for me so I'll probably go to Hollypark on Sunday. Any chance I'll see you there?

tobacco smell from the original package should not reek of smoke, or are you saying the cards were living in a smoke filled environment.
I have recieved a couple slabs that actually had a nasty smoke reek, obviously from a cigarette smoker.

That's exactly what I mean - thanks for accurately restating my concern. Perhaps ST should mean "smoke tainted". I used to smoke, so I'm not militant about it, but if second hand smoke kills, some of these cards have been dead for decades.

The only solution is to sell me the rest of the '59 Morrells I need to complete my set.

    Mark-
Have you tried laying them out on some sort of rack, where they get minimal exposure to light but a decent air current? Maybe with some baking soda or something nearby? (just realized the frig would fit this description, but thats not what I"m suggesting!). It worked for a few wool sweaters after a couple of weeks in London pubs.
I can only make HP on Saturday, guess I"ll see you in September.

the next time you smoke salmon, put them close to the smoker......that way, they will then reek like smoked salmon. Try this also if you are selling some, as the odor may attract potential bids/buyers/sea lions.

  • It's ironic that you mention smokey ordors. I just received a package of some 150 commons and it reeked of smoke. These were all graded slabs. The smell wafted out of the box and it seemed to be lodged in the styrofoam packing peanuts. I took the cards out and dumped the box and packing materials

I second Griffins' baking soda suggestion.
I would suggest that if the smell is really bad, to mention in in your feedback.
I've done that once, when a group of modern raw cards arrived smelling like an ashtray.

send them to me for a week. i'll send them back smelling like smoke, but not cigarette smoke. (see icon)

edited to say i'll get feedback saying "Cards arrived quick. Secure packaging. Smelled of cannabis"
    that would be sweet.

Pull a vacuum on it down to a few Torr and leave it for the weekend.

Or sell them all to murcer. All our cards will eventually be his with his persistence!
