I think the Irish 10 shilling storm is subsiding

Over the past few weeks I have been watching the performance of Irish 10 shillings. It seemed that just last week these coin were really going. Some of the prices these coins were going for were just incredible. Last week I was seeing non-slabbed, BU examples going for $18.50 - $30.00. This week however, final prices seem to have slowed down a bit.

Here are the last final Ebay auction prices:
$10.09
$12.00
$13.45

Bid prices with 10 hours left:
$6.94
$9.50

Ebay has been so socked with these coins the past week or it's no wonder the prices are down. Just an observation...what can I say I was boredimage

Seems like there was always a bunch of them on eBay. Maybe last week the supply just dipped below the demand for a little while?

It's a common coin. Every time there seems to be a price spike dealers and collectors who have been waiting for the chance to unload them rush to sell some on eBay. The market can't handle the surge in supply and the price drops again. Expect to see this cycle continue from time to time.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • Wishful thinking, I think. Those coins are now up to ~$20 and ~$15 with time remaining.
I'm not sure economic theory enters into the world of Ebay in such easily defined manners. The bidders can be different and each places a different value on the coin. Some may have already spent their "allowance" for that week/month. Coin condition can vary as well, but one thing is for sure, these coins have been selling for 2-3x Krause listing for so long, that the ebay prices now represent the true "value" of the coin.
Wait for Greg's coin to finish and I think you will see how high these prices can go.
Then again, I just sold a 1990 10 ECU (Krause "value" $40) for $71, which is good for me because I've found a very large supply of them for ~$20 each, as long as you speak the dealer's language.

Well, they have been undervalued in Krause for some time.

Try getting low grade 18th century copper for book value sometime, or Spanish colonial silver. Ha! While a lot of that stuff is still cheap, you usually ain't gonna touch it for anywhere near as low as book value, unless you get really lucky. (One way it can still be done occasionally is in bulk lots).
