    EO,

Do you have any NM-MT commons raw for sale.
PM me if you do. I'm helping someone build a raw set.

Eric. . .I know you know what these cards have in common. . .

    #32 - Cleon Jones IA
    #40 - Bob Barton IA
    #170 - Vida Blue IA
    #178 - Paul Schaal IA
    #519 - Ted Abernathy
    #524 - Reds Rookies

What is the status of your search to find PSA9-quality raw examples of these cards?

  • Hey EOMint,

Thx for trying! Yeah, i need some real tough ones...no question about it, but I have no doubt that if people submit more at some point they will emerge. I wish I had more time to search for raw, I have bought some wax and submitted with mixed success.

Yeah, I still have a bulk vending case of 1979's sitting here that I've yet to go through. In the old days, I would have that sucker sorted, louped, packaged, and shipped to PSA in a couple days. It's been sitting here for almost a year and I'm not real jazzed up about sifting through 8500 cards looking for PSA 9's that I can take a loss on. So it just sits here longer. Submitting cards was a lot more exciting a couple years ago.

    Steve,

I'd be interested in a vending box or two of '79s if you'd like to sell some. Let me know.

  • Optimistically speaking, these things go in cycles, so it should just be a matter of time before interest in 1970-1980 rises again. But I sold a 1-of-1 PSA 9 1976 card on Ebay about a month ago for the staggering price of $20. That did it for me -- no more 1970-1979 submissions until the market recycles. For those working on sets, I'd suggest buying raw and "rolling your own" for at least the near future.

EO-unfortunately the cards that mike mentioned just aren't out there in mint condition. i saw a schall ia, decent centering but in PSA 8. i'm keeping my eyes open.......jim

The way I see it Eric, you have two choices. . .

    1) Accept PSA8s of the toughest cards - i.e. the six I listed which have no PSA9s - and upgrade them later as PSA9 examples are found.
    2) Stick to your hard-and-fast "PSA9s only" policy - and expect a LONG (if not indefinite) wait to finish your set.

    mike,

i agree with you, even before i started a graded set i scoured through thousands upon thousands of 72's looking for the BEST 72's and those 6 cards are just plain tough. the barton schall and blue are a tall order even in psa 8. not to mention the mc rae ia and the garrett that i believe only have 1 nine graded a piece!
my heart goes out to the 90+ percenters on the 72 registry, after updates i should be at 60% and i am beginning to feel a little frustrated. granted, that the "easy 8's" are plentiful but as i narrow my focus more towards 9's i've accepted the fact that my set will NOT be done by 2005 at least not with the 8.20 or better GPA that i hoped to attain. the registry members have been an INVALUABLE help but if the cards aren't there , they aren't there.

by next week i should have an order of 150-200 cards at PSA including a barton ia, blue ia and a couple mcrae and aaron ia's , my last sub left alot to be desired. this time around hopefully i will be able to help out fellow registry members.....jim

Jim> I'm in a similar boat to Eric, but just a step down. I know I'm going to have a long search for a Barton IA in PSA8 - one of the last cards I need for my set. I have a well-centered PSA7 which I haven't entered - but I will if it's the last card I need. That's really the only tough card left. Here's what remains -
    Yaz
    Barton IA
    Bench IA
    Stargell IA
Hodges (have a PSA7 which needs resubmitted)
    Durocher
    Rose IA
    Dave Johnson
    Hansen

As for finishing by the end of 2005 with an 8.2 GPA. . .don't sell yourself short. I've only been working on this current set for about 18 months. GPA is 8.16 and 98%+ complete. I can't tell you how many cheap 9s I've passed on in the last 5 months since things have slowed down and funds have gotten tighter. You can do it. There are enough 9s that can be bottom-fed to get you to the 8.20-8.25 range. Anything higher than that and you're spending more on tougher 9s and HOFer 9s. Being willing to hunt down your own raw and submit them gives you an advantage over a lot of 72 set builders. Don't despair!

The current market for 9's certainly has made the urge to upgrade irrestible. I've gone from 8.03 to 8.17 in the last month with an eventual goal of 8.4 to 8.5 as supply permits. Good luck EO!
