Vintage sportscards and Smarty Jones

Is there anyone foolish enough on these boards
to place a big wager on Smarty Jones so you can buy
yourself that nice father's day gift ?

Betting on Smarty Jones to win is a good bet and a sure thing, in my opinion. At 2:5 odds, there is not a lot of money to be made.

However, a $2 winning ticket may sell for 50 bucks on ebay.

2 to 5 is never ever a "good bet".
The Belmont stretch is long and deep.
especially for a speed horse breaking from the outside post.

The outside post (#9) doesn't matter at Belmont Park. There is plenty of time until the first turn so Smarty will be in good position no matter what his post is. Also Belmont has these huge wide sweeping turns which means the inside posts aren't much of an advantage over the outside posts. Anyway it's a mile and a half race (a marathon for horses) so post position isn't terribly important for that kind of distance. There is a ton of time to get into the position you want in the race.

I may bet against Smarty or at least use him for second in exactas with Purge on top. I didn't like Smarty's last workout and as impressive as he has been, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness usually take a huge toll on these horses.

Sound Advice: If you must bet Smarty Jones do yourself a favor and bet him to Place. Why? Because there will be so much Win money on him that he probably will pay as much to Win as to Place. I've seen it happen before.

    Gem,

I've been looking for you on the thread of the open forum about the Belmont.

Smarty is going to win. The field is not that strong. Even in second unless a long shot
wins do you expect much of an exacta payout? Betting on Smarty to win is a crappy
bet even though I'm certain he will win. The payout is crumbs unless you bet very
very heavy. And then if you lose you are hosed.

Unfortunately, this is a race probably not worth betting. I may play some of the other
    races Saturday. Fingers crossed!

    true enough.

now if he was blind in his left eye, as i was mistakenly thinking...........

also that partial blindness may have his hearing more sensitive to the frightful din echoing from the Imposing Belmont Grandstand entering the stretch............image

other than that.....he will have a tough time making excuses.

Aconte, the thread is up and running!

Yeah this year's Belmont will be a terrible betting race, but what can one do? You have to take what they give you.

Gemmintman is correct. If you just can't let this race pass on by without making a wager, ( I know the feeling ) the smartest bet one could make on this race is Smarty Jones to place. There will be a ton of money ( $2.00 bets ) placed on the horse by bandwagoners, souvenir seekers, and sentimental types that the horse will undoubtably pay more to place than to win. That's IF he wins.
Remember the odd's only reflect the WIN pool. So, keep your eye on the place pool andimage

    My prediction
Smarty Jone's wins and pays $2.80 $2.90 $2.20 ( I hope it's not illegal to tout on these boards )

My horseracing buddy told me to try to pick the daily double. That's what he did at the Preakness.
The other thing is possibly hitting a decent payout on the tri. None of these seem easy to
me or like smart money. I guess it is the wait and see approach.

    Gem,

See you on the open forum!

Does PSA grade betting slips? Because that post about selling a winner on eBay for more than the payout sure has me thinking...

use him as a stand alone in the pick 6.

    ouch.........

that's gotta hurt like a bad Mary Lou face-lift if you bet it.

Gemmint, you're a genius. Smarty paid $3.30 to place whereas if he won he would have only paid $2.60 or so.

    Thank you.

    You're welcome.
