Red Man vs Hires

I have a question about why PSA grades Hires cards with and without their tabs but they will not grade Red Man cards without their tabs. Any info is appreicated. Thanks.

  • no perforation on the red man cards, had to cut them with scissors or a knife. The only thing I could think of is that maybe someday PSA wll grade cut Red Man's as authentic????? without a grade

    Troy,

There is no perforation on the red man cards. The Hires has one. Speaking of Hires I picked up my
first one a couple weeks ago. Man prices on these things is whacked!

    Murcerfan,

    Tony-
Assume you started on the Hires set with tabs? Prices seem pretty strong on those. My Hires set is without tabs, and keep trying to pick up a set with tabs for what they went for about a year ago, but recently they have been considerably higher.

My set seems to have a lot of variation in size. Initially this really concerned me, but everyone I"ve spoken to that is knowledgable with this issue says that is very common. I suspect more than a few submitted ones have come back min size. The prices and demand for Hires without tabs seems to be considerably stronger than for Red Man's without tabs.
And if anyone has any of the test size in ex or better please contact me- the last few are proving a bit difficult.
BTW, a little trivia- the '58 Hires design was one of the 3 finalists for the '56 Bowman set that never happened.

    Griff,

No I will not be chasing the set. I liked the Willie Jones for a few reasons. I might
try to grab an Ashburn with tab some day. The prices on these is strong. Do you
think it is because they just started to get graded by Psa or are they that rare?

I don't think they are that rare- I'd put them in a category with Red Hearts, not that I have any facts to back that up, but in tracking availability over the last 4 years it seems about right. Nothing like Dan Dees or Wilsons or Felins.
Bruce Yeko was selling complete mint sets with tabs well into the '70's, and every set I've seen thats come up have been from those. I can't see building the set card by card- there are a lot of complete sets, usually several available via auction catalog every year. Perhaps it is because PSA just started slabbing them with tabs
The test cards are a whole different story. They are really ugly imho, but the limited demand outpaces the slightly more limited supply. And I"ve only ever seen 1 with the tab- I think that was in the Copeland catalog, but it might've been Halper.
