PSA or BGS

i have a small submission for myself and a friend:

87f bonds
75t mvp #202
79t murphy
79t ryan
79t jackson
70t dodgers team #411
80t henderson (4)

would you send to PSA or BGS? from what i've noticed recently, the modern cards (BGS) are generating more $ for say an 8 or 9 grade than a PSA in the same grade. i guess an advantage in BGS i see is there are no qualifiers and 1 or 2 of the hendersons are worthy of an OC.

currently the monthly specials are the same $10 for 10 day turnaround.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

    PSA

unless you want to trim your cards up to 1/32nd of an inch all the way around to get higher grades, i heard BGS is real lenient on that kind of stuff

Personally I would always send any vintage to PSA.

I used to send about half of my modern to both PSA & BGS.

BGS is getting a reputation for grading some slightly trimmed cards, though not like PRO who will grade a 52T the size of a kelloggs, they do let some trimmed cards through. Or at least that is the perception on this and some other boards, including Beckett's on occassion.

It is true that modern generally commands more money in the same grade than a PSA equivalent, plus you get the benefit of the half grades, though sometimes that isn't a benefit. ie. Strong BGS 8.5 = PSA 9. There is no question however that vintage always garners more $$$ in PSA grade. You can decide for yourself what those reasons are.

Since you asked on a PSA board however, I would guess most of your answers are going to come back PSA. With the stuff you have I would have said PSA anyway. GAI is gaining in popularity too, but if you're a member to PSA already, then use them.

    Just my .02
  • I've wrestled with this question myself a time or two. Besides some 80's and early 90's cards I don't have much modern stuff I send in for grading. I've started sending in some 87 Fleer Bonds and chose BGS because of the 1/2 point grading system and the benefits it offers. Also sent in some 80's football with the submission as it appears to do pretty well on ebay. I believe BGS grades from 1981 to the present and BVG grades 1980 and previous, so the 87F Bonds may have to go on a separate submission with Beckett? I got my first submission back from BGS a few weeks back and was very impressed with the holder and liked the fact I could see how the four subgrades came out.

I have generally used PSA for all submissions of cards older than around 1980 and for hockey cards. Beckett does apparently grade sheet cut cards so I figured it was better to get hockey graded by PSA and remove all doubt should I choose to sell them. I also use SGC for older vintage cards, although I wouldn't recommend them for your submission if you are planning on resale.

GR and Con40 are right on - but what else would you expect from the PSA crowd? image

Seriously, anything 1980 and back belongs only in a PSA holder, and if for some reason you don't use PSA, look into GAI or even SGC...but not Beckett. BGS has really taken many hits lately due to them being caught grading trimmed cards (many times crossing PSA 9's into trimmed "Pristine" 9.5 and 10's), and the effects are being felt slowly but surely. I feel it's just a matter of time before BGS becomes as valued as their BCCG line.

Just check up on ebay and see what grading company is selling for more. It's also not the best place to ask for an honest opinion (PSA board). I've noticed that even some vintage stuff in BVG cases are pulling some nice prices. As for trimmed cards...yea BGS does grade laser cut cards (OPC hockey is pretty bad) but hey I bet PSA has let plenty of cards slip too.

I just go with what will make more money and market trends. Right now it would probably go with BVG/BGS unless your going for serious vintage cards. The half grades as well as subgrades really do help sell the cards (High subs do sell for more to people thinking of regrading).....Qualifiers are the kiss of death in my opinion and I'd request for them to lower the grade rather than put a big OC on the case.
