Big KLU RED Man cards.

Hello,

I resently started collecting Big Klu's cards and I was wondering what anyone thought was an approximate price range for these cards. I looked in Beckett LOL and they said 12 dollars a piece which seems way off. I then went to 707 web site and looked at there graded prices and I thought they were kinda high so any info would be greatly appreciated. I am looking at ebay and they rarely come up but there are two right now that I am bidding on and they seem to be going out of the range I expected. Thanks

    Troy,

You are correct about the prices on Beckett for these cards. Red man cards in raw form on ebay tend to sell at strong prices
in ex and ex/mt condition. Bidder '2565616' is a determined bidder for raw red man cards as well. I don't usually buy raw red man
cards on ebay. Both KLU red man cards that are advertised as EX+ seem to be VG to me. Raw can be tricky because it is hard
to see a crease or wrinkle on the card from looking at a scan. These cards often contain wrinkles. If this is the case then the
cards may be Good at BEST! I would say if you are patient you may find an EX graded card for around $35-$45. The raw ones
are already close to $30. I think for a couple more dollars and some patience you will eventually find your cards. Klu is a popular
red man card due to the artwork. I'm also betting that seller 'aardvark_90' may have one available soon. He's been slowly
selling mid-grade 54's graded by Sgc. If none of this works or helps then you may have to bid harder!

    Good luck!

  • Aconte et al,

I was wondering what are some of the distinquishing characteristics for determining that these cards are real if you buy them raw other than looking at them through a loupe and seeing the same type of printing dots used in other 50's cards??. If they are fake I would suspect you would not see the same printing pattern as used in other cards. Right?? Thanks

  • I don't think that fake Red Man cards are a problem. The problems arise from buying raw cards on Ebay. It's hard to see from a scan the minor imperfections that Tony stated above. Frequent problems are chipping along the edges, smudging on the tabs and minor wrinkles and creases that are hard to see from a scan alone. I would stick to buying graded cards or raw cards only if you can handle them.
  • I have another question about these. I take it that the cards were inserted on the inside of the red man pouches??? Is that correct?? I was not around when these were issued so I have no idea. I first started collecting at the age of 5 in 1981 I wish I would have collected vintage then instead of the crap I got at the candy store. OH WELL.

  • Dbj77 and Aconte,

I did a search tonight and found a whole set of reprints of 1952 Red Man's for sale. Is the Red Man community aware of this set??

  • "Near mint to mint" card purchased on eBay. Just a few light touches on each corner. Hee hee.

Even the best looking raw Red Man cards on eBay will most likely grade PSA 6 due to surface wrinkles or creases.

Perhaps Tony will show a scan of one of his Red Man packs. A minor miracle that any of the cards survived in mint condition.

I'll see if I can remember to post a scan of my pack tonight. The Reese card is far from nm, nm/mt,
or mint. The corners got some touches and their is a slight brownish tobacco stain that seems to
have bleed through on the front.

    Troy,

Yes there was a 52 Reprint set produced. Paperstock is different and the back has a different
color and is really completely different with reprint I believe written on the back. I don't own any.

    Doug,

Nice photos. I thought I put a pic of my pack on the Sgc boards. But I can't find it. Hopefully
I'll download it later tonight or tomorrow night depending on how busy I get. But by just
looking at the 55 Reese you can see how nm or even ex/mt examples plus are tough to find.

Wow. Thanks for sharing the image of that pack. It's fantastic. Do you have any idea what the market price is for the piece?

Not sure exactly the value of the 53 pack. It does have a slight tear in the cellophane but still pretty nice. I know
a 54 pack with Rip Repulski just went for $250. A few years ago an Ashburn 54 pack went for $400++. I've had
offers. My guess is the pack is worth around $1,000.

  • I do not know what anyone else thinks but that is pretty awesome to think you could pick and choose which pack you wanted. Totally cool!!!
