ebay scam feedback

I just had a friend fall prey to the ebay scam where the dirtballs send an email disguised as ebay asking for information to update their files. My friend even gave them her social security number.

Anybody heard any stories on what has happened to people that have made this mistake? I believe she has taken the necessary precautions to shield herself but would be interested in any info. Thanks.

  • I get those spoof e-mails all the time. Ones for Pay Pal also. Although I have not given them any information. I alway put down 1-800-byte-me as my e-mail address.

  • gave SSN and other info like addresss and cr. card, driver's license? Not only they can steal your friend's ebay acct. but also your friend's Identity. A lot of identity theft in the internet.

This is not internet related but similar. person got hold of my brother's info.

Years ago, my brother's wallet (w/ SSN info) was stolen from his workplace. He hanged his jacket on the coat rack. A messenger slip through their dept. to deliver a package and the next thing he knew his wallet was gone in his jacket. Same day, the person who stole his wallet was able to open dept. store accounts (prestigious dept stores in NYC) and bought expensive stuff. And was able to open an account even the whole thing was reported to the authorities. The thief was able to use his credit cards, too. He said took months to a year to straighten out everything. A well-known bank in NYC where he had a cr. card acct. gave him a hard time and was even harass by collection agency eventhough he explained and gave police reports that his wallet was stolen at work. He said Dept. store bills kept coming 2 months after reporting. Since the thief knows where he works and his position the thief was easy to get an acct.

That's one case scenario of what happens when somebody stole your vital info.

Gov't will not change your SSN. If you change SSN, it's like changing your info from birth.

That's why I don't like the gov't giving out (selling) to third parties (companies) people's info. Those search databases like USSearch.com, person.com. There's even those Netdetective that could get your vital info like driver's license, SSN, etc

Vikes, tell your friend to get a credit check, too. With the technology today these people could easily do anything. I hope nothing bad happens. It's better to take all necessary precautions. After what happen to my brother, I don't easliy give out info especially my SSN. I got pissed when I found my name on those search databases. You can't opt-out they tell you it's public records.

  • One way to help protect yourself is to contact the credit reporting agencies via phone & mail, and instruct them that they are not to issue credit reports about you without contacting you first. This makes it more difficult for someone to open accounts in your name.

  • Didn't she notice all the spelling errors? That's a pretty big tip that something isn't legitimate, however, I rec'd one today that sure looked convincing!

just keep a bad credit record, and you'll be safe from identity theft.

Suggest you immediately change your ebay password, contact your credit card companies and bank, report to ebay.

  • I also get them all the time.. I fell for it once, only once. Now if I get anything from Ebay or Paypal I DELETE it.. If it's a scam or for real, I just delete everything. I know how I stand with both, and the way I look at it is if it's that important they'll call me. Ebay has called me before. Just too many dishonest people on the net..
