Just got back from Goldberg -- Market's Sizzling White Hot!!!

Picked up 2 coins, one I really wanted and one I have no idea about.

But for the most part prices where quite high. Often the prices far exceeded the estimates given by Goldberg as well as coin price guides.

I guess the market is sizzling white hot. I had to learn early since I wasn't going to be able to afford anything else.

This is the one I really wanted for a 1911 Proof Set I'm putting together -- it's actually much nicer in hand and its a plate coin -- my first!

1911 Proof Lincoln

And here's the other one a 1864 IHC -- to cracked and put into my Wayte Raymond Type Set Album --

1864 MS IHC

And here's a 1883 No Cents Liberty I picked up for the WR Type Set as well --

Thanks,
Michael

That 1911 cent is to die for, what an awsome coin (the link in the post didn't work for me, but went to properties and
placed it into a new browser and looks great.

The 1864 cent is nice, but the 11 is so awsome I couldn't get past it. The Lib head nickel is nice too,

but that 11 is ... wow

Agree, that 1911 is ubercool. I hope that the air conditioning was working well. image Thanks for the auction report. Glad you had fun.
  • Yes, I agree, the market is sizzling white hot! I like all of your new acquisitions.

I couldn't believe how ridiculously low estimates they had. I thought maybe they weren't as well known as other auction companies and maybe stuff could go cheap. I bid on 5 Lincolns at above their high estimate and saw them go for about double my bid (was watching on ebay). That's okay, weren't ones I totally wanted anyway or I would have bid that high!

From prior posts I have gathered that the Goldbergs are nasty people and underestimate the value of their auctions. I personally wouldn't deal with them.

I'm no insider but from the sales I have attended I feel much more at ease with the Goldberg's than say Superior for example. They underestimated a few things in the Benson sales too. Nothing really wrong with that. Superior is running a 2 page CW ad "proving" how they get more money than the Bowers and Heritage for the same 'coin." It is artful reading. I'll stick with the Goldbergs when it comes to west coast auctions, I think there are less games going on with the coins.

I am watching it live on ebay and I can't believe the prices! I was high bidder on a lot before the auction went live and it does not appear on my ebay page anymore? mike

    You shout in your sleep.
Perhaps the price is just too steep.

Do they underestimate the values on purpose or just were they ignorant of the market? I thought they may just be getting the estimates from one of the many way out of date price guides. (That's another question, are the price guides being out of date on purpose too (say on early Lincolns)).

I just won another lot -- on Ebay Live (that's a first)---- $95 before the juice --- 5 raw rainbow toned Unc. Silver Eagles.

    I wonder if they'll slab??????

    No pics though!!!!

By the way -- the Goldbergs really do run a great auction and they are extremely friendly. I've spent some time talking shop with them when I've gone to register for their auctions. I think they are a class act.
