Opinions Please on 74D FS?

I was looking through my coin collection and came across a few mint sets that a relative bought for me when I was a teenager back in the 70's. I haven't looked at them closely for a very long time. I noticed that one of them had a Jefferson that looks like it might be a fullstep. It does have one nick in it on the bottom step though so I'm not sure. Anybody care to look at the attached pics and give their opinion on the grade and whether or not it is a fullstep? The pics are through the mint cellophane and the few marks and sorta haziness in a few spots are in the cellophane and not the coin. Thanks for looking and thanks, in advance, for any replies.

Looks FS to me but here's what the PCGS grading guide says:

"Full Steps (FS) is the designation following the numerical grade of some regular-strike MS-60 or higher Jefferson nickels that have at lease *five* separated steps (lines) at the base of Monticello. Any major disturbance or interruption of these steps or lines, whether caused by contact, planchet problems, or another source, will result in the coin not being designated FS. Only the slightest weakness or any step (line) is allowed for this designation. Some issues are almost never seen with Full Steps and may command a significant premium."

Your nickel actually shows 5 steps but there is a bag mark on the lowest step which, unfortunately, extends to the fourth step too. I don't know if this would be enough to invalidate the coin but it cetainly is a great looking coin with a great strike.

The nick under the 3rd pillar may keep it from getting FS designation at PCGS.

Try again that one will not make FS

    I don't buy slabs I make them
  • IMO, the nick in the 5th step will prevent a full step designation

  • Sorry, the nick in the lower level will not allow the coin to make FS. I have had several returned for sideways nicks that ran parallel with the steps and it did not make it, a nick going perpendicular through any one of the steps will prevent it from making it.

    Nice coin nonetheless.

Ok, thanks, so most likely it wouldn't get a FS designation. I always get confused with the nicks ever since I bought a PGCS slabbed MS65 73 Fullstep that has a huge nick in it.

  • I think PCGS would give this one a FS designation because it's not an expensive coin ($10 in 64FS, about $30 in 65FS and $70-90 in 66FS.) If it were a less common Full Step date then they might think twice. It seems to be a light nick and the steps are "screaming" otherwise.
