Standards for DMPL Morgans - the past vs. now

Here's a DMPL Morgan up for auction at Heritage:

1882-CC MS65 DMPL

It's in an older slab. The coin appears kind of milky in the fields, although you can't always tell from a scan.

Do you think that this coin would make DMPL today? Has PCGS changed their standards over the years for DMPL Morgans?

I'm not sure if that's really haze--looks more like a crappy scan (which wouldn't surprise me in the slightest)....

Their coins look a great deal different in hand. That dmpl probably looks much better in person.

I don't submit so I really don't know for sure how tough they are. I have heard from many that do indeed submit and a dealer that specializes in DMPL Morgans that they are tough these days. What I'm hearing is they aren't making DMPL Morgans very easily lately. I suspect the coin needs to be all there with great depth in the mirrors and nice cameo like black and white. So basically they need to be all there to make it. But isn't that the way it should be? BTW, most of this information I have has mainly been about CC Morgans the most.

I believe years ago there were more PL Morgans in DMPL holders.

I submit that it's probably an issue with light reflecting from the fields. DMPL coins can be hard to photograph!
  • Interesting question...

My dealer recently aquired 10 CC DMPLs and I was estatic to get the first shot at looking through them. They were all in the old PCGS holders, and were not entirely impressive. We both agreed that more than half of them would likely garner a PL grade if resubmitted. image
    You shout in your sleep.
Perhaps the price is just too steep.
