PSA 9oc vs PSA 7

Let's say you have a card and it can be graded either PSA 9oc or straight PSA 7. Which would you prefer??

depending on the centering, i would choose a 9 OC

9oc even though I hate qualifiers.

The registry points are the same; and the 9 tells others about the card's other nice attributes. This is especially true if the card is obviously oc.

9 o/c , I prefer a pack fresh card with poor centering over a card that could have the same centering but other faults. you know the rest of the 9 o/c is nice , the 7 could have other faults
  • I would choose a 7. I just absolutely hate qualifiers.

It depends upon the set. For pre-war, I think I'd like the 9 OC, since there are so few 9's (qualified or not).

It really does depend on the age of the card in question. But, I hate qualifiers as much as everyone has stated, and would probably choose the 7.

I'd much rather have a centered PSA 7.

Look for a 9 (oc) that is not really badly centered, especially in vintage material when the printing process was much more haphazard than it is now. PSA graders are human (or so I have heard) and different ones may feel differently about the degree of centering, despite the guidelines. And it can even change from card to card, due to design. Graders have that power, to use discretion and consider the overall appearance.

Here is an example of a 9 (oc) 1953 Topps that I think stands a chance as a straight 8 if resubmitted raw, because of all of the above. If it succeeds, the buyer has doubled his investment.

The risk, of course, is that the grader gives it 8 (oc). You pays your money and you takes your chances!

  • I'd have to go 9(OC). If the card has 9-calibre corners and everything else, it's a nice way of pointing that out while recognizing the lack of 9 centering. Seems like that's exactly what qualifiers exist for.

Of course, I (and I expect many others from reading other threads) would still prefer a well-centered 8. Extra registry points aside, the allowable defects in corners for an 8 typically aren't enough to offset the added eye appeal of good centering for me.

  • If the PSA 7 is off center then I would go with the PSA 9OC. If the PSA 7 is centered then its an eye appeal thing and I would go with the PSA 7, provided it didn't have any glaring print defects.
